First, bikini line laser surgery probably costs about 2-3 thousand USD. It depends on the hair and how many treatments you need. I have a friend who had it done and it looks gorgeous. It's VERY painful though. Think of it as a thick rubber band being snapped against your skin very fast for a long period of time.

Secondly, I am FINALLY an Esthetician. It was an incredible and educational journey that I am excited to begin as a career. KP was my "thesis" topic, here is what I recommend for ALL KP sufferers to try on areas of the body, except inside of the vaginal area. From my research KP is something that almost 50% of the population suffers from, it is, in short, an over production of Keratin (a protein that makes up your hair and nails) in the hair follicle. People with KP seem to exfoliate less naturally than others so we have to prod it along. Chemical exfoliation has been working for me. Find a body wash and lotion with salacylic or glycolic acid in it. Depending on your KP, you may need a "cosmesutical" grade formulation, meaning you can not get it at the grocery or drug store. It is something either you have to get from a dermatologist or a professional esthetician. If you are a teen (or just a frugal adult) and can not afford to spend $40 on a bottle of body lotion, try your own enzime "peel" smash up some papaya fruit and rub it on the area and rinse (this is good for your face as well) The key to controlling KP is exfoliation. DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT use a cheap manual exfoliant, something like the St. Ies apricot. This is why. Inexpensive manual exfolants, (manual exfoliant menaning something with granuals in it), are inexpensive for a reason. In order to keep cost down the labs that make it can not use the highest quality products. Under a microscope a cheap exfoliant looks like broken shards of glass. The granuals are not smooth, but a better quality exfoliant will have a smooth surface which will not scratch your skin but gently rub off the top few layers of skin. A chemical exfoliant on the other hand, will give you better exfoliation. If you are young do not consider using a chemical exfoliant on your face without the advice of a professional esthetician or dermatologist. If you would like to email me privately, I will give you some product names to try. See your dermatologist, Ammonium Lactic Acid has also worked for me.

If you are someone who is interested in skin, as a KP sufferer myself, I urge you to get into the business of skin. Become a dermatologist or an esthetician. If you do that, you can treat your own KP witout having to pay prices that the rest of the public has to pay. You can play with formulations of products that are "cosmesutical" grade and find the best one for you. KP can be an expensive thing to treat, but if you have the resources to do it yourself, it makes life alot easier! The best thing about being an esthetician is the FREE SERVICES (waxing, facials, etc)
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do a patch test before trying ANY new product on your body. Give it 24 hours to react, if you don't get an allergy, proceed with caution and give it a try!
As a disclaimer, and to protect myself, CONSULT A DERMATOLOGIST before doing anything you feel uneasy about using.

Also, as an esthetican you can get additional training that makes you certified to run a laser hair removal machine. Talk about being hairless for next to NOTHING!

I've been trying to contact you about product names and advice, but your PMs don't work.

It can be helpful to take a dry face cloth and rub the area before showering (to loosen up the skin). I've found that shaving in the direction of the hair (instead of against it) does actually help, although it's not super smooth. I have very light hair so it's not so much of a problem. I've had some killer ingrown hairs but if I am careful to not shave against the grain (so to speak), I'm okay.

I have a major prob with ingrowns in my pubic area, thighs, etc...and have stumbled across this...The Seiko line for feminine areas:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/se...658090-9791927
I havent recieved it yet, but have heard wonderful things about both items. Im hoping it will save my thighs and bikini line from the pain and scarring.

Sugaring, waxing, tweezing, epilating... It's all the same.

Anytime the hair is pulled from the root, you risk ingrowns. A vigorous scrub is always a very good idea, but a dry, electric shave beats everything accept laser hair depilitation for prevention of ingrowns. And BTW? I bought the Body Bare shaver which is much like the Seiko shaver, and I love it. I have fewer ingrowns with it than with ANY other method I've tried and it never bites me.

I had the same problem but recently invested in getting my hair removed with lasers. It's pricey ($1000-$1500) but if you think about never shaving that area again, always being ready for a swimsuit (or whatever else), and most importantly, NO INGROWN HAIRS! Save up and do it. Trust me you won't regret it.

HOME MADE TEND SKIN RECIPE
In case you like tend skin but find it expensive (like me):

####AS WITH ALL PRODUCTS I ADVISE ANYONE WHO IS THINKING OF USING THIS TESTS THE LOTION ON A SMALL PATCH OF SKIN AND LEAVE FOR AT LEAST FOR 24HRS BEFORE APPLYING AS USUAL#####

1) Crush 18 tablets of uncoated aspirin
2) Dissolve these in 5.5 oz of 70% rubbing alcohol (surgical spirit to the BRITS)
3) Crush 8 tablets of uncoated aspirin
4) Dissolve these in 2.5 oz of witch hazel
5) Combine the rubbing alcohol and witch hazel solutions. Some settling of aspirin may occur,
just shake it well before you use it. Enjoy
APPLY once a day after waxing to prevent and treat ingrown hairs

Aspirin won't dissolve in witch hazel...

I've been making homemade TendSkin for just over a year now and find it extremely helpful. I make it in very large quantities. I wanted to point out a change that probably needs to be made to this version of the recipe. Aspirin is NOT water soluable. The aspirin must-be dissolved in the alcohol, NOT the witch hazel, which is water based. I've used it both with and without the witch hazel and I cannot tell the difference. Once the product is applied and dry, it is waterproof which is one of it's best properties... you can apply moisturizer immediately after and it doesn't budge.

Also, I use it on my bikini area every day after shaving. The makers of TendSkin suggest just barely dampening a cotton ball with the solution for use after waxing but I'm used to the little bit of sting, so I spritz it on with a spay bottle. There is no caution against it's use in the bikini area, in fact, it is recommended especially for that area in women.

PS. I use a coffee grinder to crush the aspirin. Then I splash a bit of the alcohol in the grinder to get out the powder and then I rinse it. You could have a grinder slated just for it's use, but the trace amount of aspirin left in it is harmless and I use it the next day for coffee again.

salicylic acid

I wanted to ask you a question about salicylic acid. I have used it before as an exfoliant on my face in an Aveda product. So the amount of acid was already balanced with other ingredients and it is a liquid you put on before going to bed. I find that works fairly well, but I alternate using that with an exfoliant from Kiehl's which is small balls, which they say are machine produced so they don't tear the skin. My skin does not get upset when I use the Kiehl's so I think it is probably ok.

I have a tub (450g) of salicylic acid ointment (2% w/w). I am using it to get rid of some hard skin on my foot, but I noticed that it says on it, "for topical use for Hyperkeratoses." The Keratoses part made me wonder if that would be ok to use on my face or not? So as an Esthetician...do you happen to know if I could mix this with aqueous cream or if I can use it straight to treat KPRF?

Thanks.

Re: Ingrown Hairs?

This is the advice I've gotten on this topic:
(In no particular order)

1. Shaving in the direction of the hair growth.
2. Tweezing.
3. Waxing.
4. TEND SKIN (Welcome to the Tend Skin Company Web Site)
5. Laser Hair Removal.

I've use Schick Silk Effects, I don't get ingrown hairs anymore and this razor doesn't cut/knick, it has a movable head that moves with the contours of your body.
(Schick Silk Effects - Google Product Search

What ever you DON'T PICK! You'll just make it worse.
