kp and pregnancy
Has anyones kp got worse after having a baby?? Ive heard people say that their kp improved when they were pregnant. Mine seemed to have gotten worse when I was pregnant, now my baby is 7 months old and it is really stubborn now. Has anyone else had this problem?

mine was okay with preganancy, but it was post labor that just messed me up. I ended up having KP everywhere. It was so painful on my legs, I could not shave them.
Eventually it subsided at about 6 months (I think my hormone levels went back to normal). And I was back to my normal level of KP....oh joy... ![]() |

REAL bad after baby.
I just joined this sight for this exact reason! I just had a baby in March and my KP is out of control. I've always had a mild case, now it is beyond extreme. I've tried prescriptions, buff puffs, retin A, vitamins, sensitive soaps. Nothing is working. The baby is now 5 months, I wonder when it will get better.

Post natal KP was out of control for me too (and is also what brought me to this site). It's so discouraging when your body is already in recovery mode to be dealing with a skin issue as well. I also tried everything I could afford to try, but time was the greatest healer. It's must better now (my DS just turned 2), but I have KP is places I didn't have it before. It was wonderful during pregnancy. I had such smooth skin, I wore sleeveless shirts all the time.
I don't understand why, if this is a follicular exfoliation issue, there would be such a strong hormonal connection. Last edited by ary99; 09-17-2004 at 04:02 PM. |

Just wondering if birth control pills have in anyway affected anyones KP? If so what pill were you on? Everyone reacts differently to diff hormones, etc. but curious.
I read a few post in the archives about BCP - and some say it helped their KP, whereas some say it didn't help - but soon as they got off the pill KP got worse. My KP got gradually worse after puberty. I had KP on my cheeks and very lightly when I was a baby but "went away" till puberty. And now it just won't go away...yay fun. I'm not a blamer but I do blame hormones for PMS! lol and maybe even a little for KP. Hope someone can fill me in on their experience with BCP and KP. Thanks! |

My keratosis pilaris was very mild until my pregancies. My last baby, Henry, is one year old and the KP still persists but is improving with treatment. Does anyone know whether the KP improves?

I always had KP on my upper arms and legs.
After having my son it spread over all my legs and arms, stomach and back, and seems to just get worse. My son is now three and a half and i've just turned thirty (I thought it also got better with age!). There perhaps is a link between pregnacy and KP. As for the pill, I decided to try the evra patches (quite new) so I wonder if there is a link with them on my KP getting worse |

Hi, in case you haven't seen them, there are a couple posts about hormones under the thread "I've hit a breakthrough please read".

hi,
any of you put on weigth during pregnancy? This condition is caused by rubbing of clothes on your skin and if the clothes become tight, it gets worse. That's also why it gets better in the summer - light loose clothes, less friction. Sun helps too, but don't expect too much. It basically just makes it less visible, as the skin gets darker and it's not so much contrast. Body milks helps a little, the skin feels smoother. But we all have just to accept it. It is a mechanical thing, and we can't run around naked all the time. If it ever goes away or becomes better, it usually is because something has changed: you were different clothes - looser, or you move less - less friction, or you loose some weigth - your regular clothes become looser. BTW, men don't really mind. Most of them don't notice that at all. They hardly notice your new haircut... So just don't worry. There are 40% of population who have this condition, so why would you worry? |

I thought I had spider bites, turns out its keratosis
I know exactly how you feel. I've never had this before (keratosis pilaris rubra) until I got pregnant w/ my daughter. This is the biggest issue I have with my skin, sometimes, the bumps fill up with puss and it gets so bad that I have to get my arm lanced open and end up with scars. My arm has been lanced open three times in the last year, one scar is an inch long, and I was even hospitalized once because the infection kept getting worse. We thought they were spider bites at first, but now I'm starting to think it the keratosis.
Will this ever end? |

Yes!
The weird thing about my two pregnancies were that the first one gave me excema for the first time and the second one sent my KP into overdrive! It used to be on my upper arms and now it's on my forearms too!
My daughter is 8 months old now and thankfully it's summer so that I can expose my arms to the sun. I am trying any and all lotions and exfoliants, etc as diligently as possible. I haven't got anything to lose. I put on lotion as much as I can. The Jergens Skin Smoothing lotion is my favorite. Some people say they can't find that particular Jergens lotion anymore. But my dermatologist said "invest" in Aveeno. So anyway, I'm fairly preoccupied with it. I'd had it on my upper arms since I was a pre-teen and it actually went away when I hit 30. Once it started up again I was partly po'd and partly worried. It's a bummer. So just stay on track with the exfoliants and lotions. I am not one to go with dermabrasion techniques or expensive retin-A type things. Whether your skin responds immediately or in another year, what KP skin N E E D S is exfoliation and moisture. So do that if nothing else. And enjoy those babies. ![]() |
