Microdermabrasion?

anyone try it for KP? I am checking into it. It will be expensive but I don't care at this point.

A while back I was going to try to be in a study at Stanford U that was doing microderm. for KP. I couldn't make the frequent trips so I didn't do it but now I am ready to just pay for it.

microderm

Please let us know how it goes. I wish I'd known about that Stanford study! I live in San Francisco so it would've been a short trip for me. Oh well. Even if something is expensive, if it gets rid of my KP, I'd be willing to pay for it. I'm 31 and have lived my whole life covered up, and have never had a boyfriend because I'm too self-conscious about my KP, which covers my arms, legs, and buttocks. Please keep us updated and good luck!

Store bought Microderm

Hi ladies,

I'm gonna try the new microdermabrasion kit by L'oreal. It is probably a lot less effective than the salon treatments, but worth a shot. It was less than $20 at Target stores, so if it works I might fork up the money for salon treatments.

I'll keep you posted.

what is microdermabrasive? some type of exfoliating? I've had kp all my life (44) and now my youngest daughter (13) has it worse. It is on her face. I will try anything. I test on me and if it shows some improvement, I try it on her. Please post what this is and the results. Thanks

Microdermabrasion is skin resurfacing. An abrasive crystal is used to exfoliate the skin (physically). I think for anti-aging they also combine with chemical peels.

There are some at home microdermabrasion products...I tried dermanew a while ago. For me, it just seemed to irritate my skin further. I usually do better with chemical exfoliants though esp because I scar so easily. Obviously, the do-it-yourself kits are not the same as pro ones.

Some microdermabrasion uses salts, crystals, etc. If I recall correctly, professional treatments use aluminium oxide. The newers ones also use some form of a diamond wand.

I know microdermabrasion removes the top layer or the skin, and dermabrasion works on lower levels and usually leaves scabs.

elleone - do you happen to know what the results were from the study? I'm just glad to hear someone actually did a study on Keratosis Pilaris! yay!

Hi Nala,

I never found out the results of the study at Stanford but I did try a session of my own. It was pretty much the same as exfoliating on my own. The skin was softer for about a day but then got bumpy again. Then I tried laser hair removal, thinking that made a little more sense since the bumps are keratin - or hair protein. But that didn't do anything after about 5 treatments. I think the hair on my arms is too light. It did reduce my underarm hair, though, which is nice.

I am currently trying herbal supplements to see if I can treat it from within. I consulted a nutritionist/herbalist and she has me on golden seal, master gland, colloidal minerals, noni juice and a bowel detox. I also drink aloe juice and a green powder drink. Some of these things are for overall nutrition, not so much skin but some or most are supposed to help skin. So, we'll see. It's been about 4 weeks and so far nothing. But she says that it takes time to notice improvement with herbs.

I really don't think physical exfoliation does much for me either, esp in the long run.

Hope the herbal supplements work for you, do keep us posted on results. I've never done a detox before, do you feel low on energy, lethargic, etc.? Have you noticed any other differences? Mood swings, etc.?

Best wishes

Hi,

I felt low energy before I started the herbs but since I have started I haven't noticed any improvement. So, I don't feel any worse or better. I'm going to give it more time, though. She said it usually hits you months later when you realize "hey , my skin feels better" or "I have energy now" it's more subtle than taking a drug. I'm also trying to eat lots of vegetables because I read here that vitamin A deficiency can be a cause. Pumpkin has lots of A and so do leafy greens.

elleone , you said u tried laser hair removal, did you go to a clinic or use a home kit. Just curious bc i am looking at Epila at the moment.

My derm said using a buff puff to exfoliate in the shower would only aggreviate KP condition, so i am curious about all the glycolic acid recommended on this site etc.

Hi, I went to a skincare salon for the laser treatments. I didn't know there were home kits for laser.

I have also read that physical exfoliating like the buf puf can make KP worse but it is hard to resist doing it. It helps temporarily but that's it.

microdermabrasion

I recently bought the dermanew system from e-bay at only a fraction of the cost.
However I guessed it was probably a "never-used" returned kit b/c it didnt' seem unsealed. Anyways, I'm very happy I didn't pay the full price. This is prasied highly on the dermadoctor site--how else could they get people to shell out $130.00. B/c I noticed that the crystals are not sufficient for a 30 day supply--it's the same ingredient as the Neutrogena system. So I will just buy replacement from them or what ever brand sells for less.

I just used the system along with my daily program. Skin is smooth--bumps have yet to budge. I will try peels. (my poor skin!!!)

Good luck everybody

I'm sorry to be so honest, but DON"T DO IT!!! I tried it, on my face and arms, and it made my skin even worse. I actually had to get other skin treatments done to correct it. Waste of time..and money..

I actually work at a spa where I give microderm treatments. It is an aggressive form of mechanical exfoliation. I was having it done on the backs of my arms every two weeks. After my first treatment, I was on top of the world. I thought finally I found something that is working! After my first treatment my skin felt nice and smooth, although the appearance hadn't changed. But as time passed the rough feeling came back. I had several treatment after and didn't have the same results. I was very bummed! I don't know why or what happened. But it didn't work for me. I did buy some coconut oil today though. I am going to try it out tonight!! I am hopeful!!!! I'll keep you posted.

yes, microdermabrasion is safe \. itr will work nice on your acne scars and first fine lines, but you have to be patient, best results are obvious after the entire treatment, 8 sessions. first results, however, are visible after the first session.
