I have the same problem here.its very embarrassing and just ruins your self-esteem. i have been using neutrogena body clear body scrub for a few weeks now and it seems to help a little but doesnt completely "cure" it. I have a question though..when i go to the beach it seems that all of it on my arms, legs, and buttocks just disappears. its hardly red or bumpy..does anyone have a theory on that?

Try the 3% salicylic acid/sulfur soap from www.sulfursoap.com. I think its very helpful. When you use it, let it sit on your skin a couple minutes before you rinse it off. You might also want to try the Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA from Paula's Choice (www.cosmeticscop.com).
Soap: once a day Body treatment: once or twice a day. Hopefully you'll see results in a couple weeks. This combination took care of the problem for me. I suggest avoiding any kind of harsh scrubbing--I find that only makes things worse. |

My only theory is that the warmth restricts blood vessels so that the redness is less visible at the skin's surface, and that the bumps decrease like goosebumps...I have noticed the same thing.

I would say my symptoms were moderate. Certainly they were distressing. Did not get better or worse with changes in weather.
If your condition is severe, I would suggest adding benzoil peroxide to your daily routine--apply it after using the BHA product. It can bleach or stain clothing, so let it dry before getting dressed. The benzoil peroxide from Paula's Choice is really good. |

I have KP worst on the backs of my thighs and buttocks. My derm told me to try to get some sun on the area a few times a week. Not to try to tan, but just direct exposure for 10 mins or so. At first it didn't seem to help much. The bumps seemd to get "pinker" and when the initial ones healed the spots were darker than usual. But several weeks in it became apparent the the bumps themselves were lessening and my skin was smoother.
UV does something to decrease the amount of keratin the skin makes so the cells aren't as sticky, which is actually treating the CAUSE rather than the symptoms which is all that creams, lotions and exfoilants can do. KP is caused by an overproduction of keratin in the skin. Our skins were meant to be exposed to the sun.The hardest part is managing to expose my tush to the sun with any privacy and managing to do it at all in the winter in New England! *groan* And most tanning salons aren't "safe". If you're worried about UV and cancer, try googling "sun vitamin D cancer" and you may be amazed at what you find. Good luck! -Laura |

Yogagirl, if you have the bumps on your buttocks and nowhere else on your body, you most likely don't have KP. I'm guessing it's a bacterial infection and the topicals you've tried so far are not targetting the specific bacteria that is causing the eruptions.
To know for sure you'd need to go to a derm. He may do a lab culture to identify the bacteria, then prescribe a topical, or oral (if it's really bad) medication. Auntdynee, the bumps you got from the wet swimsuit were probably not related to your KP, they were most likely bacterial too. |

According to my derm, it's very easy for a follicle clogged with skin cells to become infected by local bacteria. According to her, even though KP and acne are two separate things, KP can easily become acne given the right conditions, ie "bacteria, moisture and warmth".
Before my children were born I had just a hint of roughness on the backs of my arms but I routinely had breakouts on my bottom that followed the exact same pattern that the KP now follows. When I mentioned it to her she said that the KP was always "there" to a lesser degree even before it became severe enough to get my attention, and that because we sit on our tushes and they are always covered and do sweat (and sweat more when we work-out) that I would always be more prone to acne there because of it.
