Loss of eyebrow hair

Hi Harmy and Trent if you are reading this. I have not been on this board for a while. I will briefly relate my own story and why I am back here. At age 14 I developed by ulerythema ophryogenes and atrophoderma vermiculata (red pitted cheeks). Like some of your I was not correctly diagnosed until several years later (age 35 in fact). I am now 43 and the redness has subsided. I had PDL treatment done 3 years ago with some success. I live in NZ and the cost of travel and the price of treatment by the only PDL in the country is very expensive so I have not been back for repeat treatments at this stage. I use retina-A cream (brand name Retinova) and that has improved the texture of my skin. As I am female I can pencil in my eyebrows and cover my skin with makeup and look quite acceptable.

Of concern is that my 9 year old son has had one red itchy eyebrow over the last year. I can now see some notable hairloss and KP bumps. As this child was born with a congenital heart condition I am wary that other congenital abnormalities may be present. Like you guys I seem to know more about this condition that the specialists. I have been under 6 dermatologists over 21 years and have had 5 wrong diagnosis's! Finally I got correctly diagnosed and the dermatologist had to return overseas. My city no longer has a specialist and the ones I have tried in the towns nearby know nothing about this condition. I therefore turn to you for some answers to these questions:

At what age did the symptoms appear and what what the progress of these?

This cream you talk of - is this it's proper name or just a brand name? Any other advise would be appreciated as I am not sure if this condition shows itself differently in guys or not.

Regards
Anne

Harmy

Harmy, let's have an update if you can provide one...

I have too found that Monoxidil has worked in regrowing eyebrow hair! Just as it was getting thicker, I went in for my PDL treatment and they shaved them again!!!! My face is now bruised and a little swollen under my left eye. Hopefully the bruising will get better by next Monday when I return to work. I've started the Minoxidil all over again (or really just continued it) hoping it will grow the brows back faster than normal. I'm never letting them shave again!! This is it for me. If the PDL didn't work, I'm done. Just going to regrow my brows and live life. We'll see...

Trent

Hi ! I can only say that my condition is still improving. Good to hear that Monoxidil is also working for you Trent ! It takes some time (couple of months) before you really see the improvements. I'm verry happy with it ! I'm only using it for regrowing my eyebrows ! Minoxidil is the active ingredient. Search Google and you'll find a lot of places to buy it. My Ulerythema started about two years ago. I'm now 22. I also have KP on my cheeks. KP started when I was 15 I think.

Keep up the spirit !!

Harmy

Update

Hi all. An update almost 4 weeks after my PDL treatment. They shaved my eyebrows again (latter half) to get the best contact possible with the laser. After the PDL my cheeks and eyebrows were like purple-dark red. I waited and after about 7 days it all went away but the red didn't. I didn't have redness that bad on my cheeks and eyebrows, but you could see the mask look so I wanted that gone. Well, 4 weeks later I have bad news. It made my condition worse. Now I'm redder than before on my cheeks and eyebrows. Don't know what to do...I'm gonna post this in the Rubra Faceii section too... good news is Minoxidil is once again growing back my eyebrows but less hairs now after the PDL... :-(

Trent

Eyebrows almost back to normal

Just want to give you all an update. After using Monoxidil for one year my eyebrows look very good !! They're almost totally back to normal. I must say I'm very happy with it because somehow it gives my face more expression.
Are there still other people using the Monoxidil ??

Harm

Great news Harmy - I am going with my son to see a dermatologist in a couple of weeks as he is showing signs of UO on one eyebrow. Thanks for sharing your success story. I will mention to the Dr about the Monoxidil.

Has anything else helped you - my son is only 10. (I have the condition myself)

regards
Anne

Harmy, can you explain exactly what you do with the minoxidill, how do you put it on, how much, and when/how often? Do you put anything over it like lotion or anything after it dries? Thanks!

Also, did you continue with the Retin-A and what was your process for that?

'erythema' is red - not quite sure what the 'ul' stands for though.

hi harmy,

just wondering if minoxidil is still really working for you. I tried it for 2 weeks=was fine and then suddenly my eyebrows were very red and irritated, so I stopped using it. just curious....

Minoxidil - forever?

Hi all!

I'm new to this forum and I have a question about Minoxidil. I noticed that some of you had progress re-growing eyebrows using the stuff, congratulations!

Question: can you stop using Minoxidil when a satisfying result is achieved or do you have to continue the treatment "forever"?

dermy had no idea!!

Hi have been with my son to the dermy,he has been at last fully diagnosed with uo. but no magic cure i'm afraid. said he could try some real strong pills but sure my son ok to live with it. would not recomend minioxil as said hair could grow anywhere though he did say it would work but he said not to use it, once the sun comes out my lads skin looks brown and redness look ok for a while anyone have skin like sandpaper? are there any exfolients that would work?

I'm sorry for this late reply. I did not visit any forum for a long time. I'm still using Minoxidil and my eyebrows are looking great ! It takes a lot of time for eyebrows to regrow. In my case it's still working. I just put a little bit of Minoxidil (5 % without retin-A) with my fingers on my eyebrows every night. I only use it in the night without doing anything else. One time I used a different kind of Minoxidil with vitamine A I think. It really irritated my eyebrows so I stopped using it.

My eyebrows still get red when it's cold. Good luck to you all !!
