Visited the Derm again

Went back to the Derm I've been seeing at a University and Cancer research center. Guess I was hoping something new would have come (even new ideas) since they are into research and academics.

Nothing.

They told me it's a genetic defect and nothing can fix it. Great!

They did perscribe Lacticare (hydrocortizone 2.5%) for the brows redness.

Then I brought up Demodex. They said it's usually not in the brows but they gave me a sulfur lotion to try at night.

Next is more IPL for the face. They don't want to do the brows because IPL is also for hair removal! PDL is too much bruising for me to handle going to work. I'll do as many IPLs as it takes to get the red face off, but my #1 priority was to get the red out of the brows (then grow the hair back)...doesn't look like that's going to happen.

They gave me a brochure on Accutane, but told me of all the possible side effects, tracking of my doses, and the fact that it probably won't work. I told them "no thanks".

Sorry can't give you more positive news...

forget accutane does not work for our condtion, go with PDL (V-beam) its not as bruising as everone claims it is, Ive had 2 so far and only 2 minor purple spots that healed in less than 10 days. I also had 3 IPL treatments done for hair removal on my cheeks. PDL works after a couple treatments, going to have about 3 more done over the next 3 months. I started IPL in oct and finished in dec with 3rd treatment. started PDL for redness on cheeks in dec and will finsh by april. (5 total)

demodex mites are just a theory no real derm belives they cause problems because even people without skin condtions have demodex!

also look into Paxil medication it stopped my flushing and blushing!

and try going to a respected derm with a private practice not a University just because they are some big University and sounds medically great, Ive been to Univ of Pennsylvania, im sure u heard of it, all they offered was accutane and said it MIGHT help. and laser treatments at a Univ will cost an arm and a leg.

try aquaphor by eucerin for your brows!

Re: Visited the Derm again

Jason,
You say, "Demodex mites are just a theory. No real derm believes they cause problems because even people without skin conditions have demodex".

You are partially correct. Everybody has demodex (just as everybody has candida). The problems occur when demodex (and candia) become out of control and go into over-growth, most likely due to compromised immune system. Too many people here have reported success with sea buckthorn when treating KP to call it a theory. Western medicine does not recognize candida over-growth, either. Believe me, I live with candida over-growth everyday, so it doesn't matter what an allopathic physician says.

Re: Visited the Derm again

Jason,

I am treating my immune system (among other measures). My point is that western medicine doesn't have all the answers. If it did, we wouldn't be here on this forum. So we explore other remedies, such as sea buckthorn for demodex mites, and hopefully we don't rule out remedies just because western medicine doesn't sanction them.

If "no real derm" believes in demodex mites being a cause of KP, it doesn't mean anything to me. No western doctor believes in candida being a cause of distress throughout the body that can be treated by diet and strengthening the immune system. In other words, just because a western doctor doesn't accept a particular cause/effect is no reason not to treat it ourselves if we find something that works. Sea buckthorn seems to work for a lot of people.

By the way, sea buckthorn is not a "sea organism". It is a shrub that grows on land. Plants are the source of lots of herbal remedies that western medicine has not yet embraced, even though other cultures have successfully used these remedies for centuries.
