Recently diagnosed with UO

Hi im 17 recently diagnosed with UO after six months of thinking i had rosascea. Was wonderin if anyone suffers from red cheeks/face and not problems with eyebrows, i also have KP but only on the outer parts of my arms. Stimulants for my redness are exercise, alcohol, spicy foods, embarassment, stress, and others. Can anyone else reltae to these symptoms? Any advice etc please throw my way.
Thanks

you were probably diagnosed incorectly, other people will be able to help you, did you see a qualified derm or did a gp diagnose you?

A gp diagnosed me with rosascea, i underwent rosascea treatment for 4 months to no avail. I recently was diagnosed by a qualified derm as having UO. Im going to see a second derm soon, so maybe that outcome will be different.

Hi Joe 1234

It is not uncommon for keritinization disorders to be misdiagnosed as Roseacea. You obviously have normal KP (keratosis pilaris) on your arms. The question is what is happening to your cheeks.

Like you I was misdiagnosed with Rosacea and of course didn't respond to any of the treatments. From what you said it sounds like you have a keritinization disorder but which one? Because the three disorders relating to the face are not that common they can often get misdiagnosed. Here is a summary of what each disorder is (I have no medical background but have these disorders so kind of know about them for that reason)

The following two disorders come under the heading of KPAF (keratosis pilaris atrophicans faciei) as they cause redness and scarring:

Ulerythema Oprhryogenes (literally means 'Ul' (scarring) 'eyrthema (redness) Ophryo (of the eyebrows) genes (genetic?)
This is red KP bumps on the outer third of the eyebrows that result in hair loss and redness

Atrophoderma Vermiculata (atrophy of the dermis in a symetrical way i.e. either side of the cheek)
This occurs on the top part of the cheeks. It causes redness and scarring and a rough pitted look to the skin. aka honeycomb atropy

The other condition affecting the face is KPRF (refer the forum on this site) this stands for Keratosis Pilaris Rubra Faciei
These are red KP bumps on the face usually occuring on the outer and bottom parts of the cheeks. This causes redness and flushing.

All of the above conditions tend to appear or get worse in the teenage years.

From what you said you definately don't have UO but KPRF or atrophoderma vermiculata may be worth looking at.

By the way some doctors confuse UO with Atrophoderma vermiculata as they can often appear together (as in my case).

Hope this is of some help

Hi Anne,
Thanks for replying. In light of the new information you have provided my condition sounds most like the keritinization disorder, Atrophoderma Vermiculata, althoguh my skin does not especially look rough or pitted. All the derm said was UO on the face and KP on my arms, and yet i have no problems with my eyebrows. I am going to see a second derm soon so maybe the otucome will again be different.
Thnks Again.
