Derms comment on redness associated with UO
Thought I would mention when I saw my derm last week I asked him what caused the redness around the eyebrows. He didn't know exactly but said the redness was because of damaged blood vessels. What was of interest though is that he said from biopsys on other red skin conditions i.e. port wine stains - they have found that 99% of the blood vessels in the biopsy are normal and it is only about 1% that is abnormal and causing redness. This allows laser treatment to target the abnormal vessel (with the help of a microscope) to reduce the redness. He said if every blood vessels in the area was destroyed you would loose some feeling however as the laser only targets the few abnormal ones it does not effect the surrounding tissue.
I know it may not be of any great encouragement to ones with this condition but it is good to know it is only a few blood vessels causing the redness and that the majority of them are quite normal. I have had two V-beam pulse dye laser treatments over the last 4 years and hope to have another one next year. The treatment is expensive and the recovery time is at least two weeks so it is not something you would get done every couple of months. It has improved the redness but like a lot of treatments it is not an 'instant' fix (well not in my case anyway). I asked the derm 'does it matter what caused the skin redness' for the pulse dye laser to treat it i.e. is it better suited to portwine stains and roscacea than to UO. The derm said that Candela (the maker of the V-beam pulse dye laser) say that "if it is red - it can be treated". |

Re: Derms comment on redness associated with UO
Actually I dont have that much redness that I need to cover it like you all. It comes if I scratch or wipe with a towel so its definitely a sensitive area . You can try avoiding to rub or scratch and see if it alleviates the redness. It should.
