Re: Dandruff Shampoo

My son uses Head and Shoulders as a body wash. He's a wrestler and it keeps you from getting mat fungus (impetigo)

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

hey everyone.
i dunno if any of you remember me, but i was on here a few months ago. due to EXTREME family trauma (EG. many loved ones died, mental health issues etc.) i had to leave for awhile. but anyways, i'm back! now i read this forum and along with AHA, i THINK (trying not to get my hopes up here) it has improved. A LOT. i had rid most of teh bumps with AHA, but i still had small stubborn ones that refused to leave, now the ones i do have are further apart and look more pinky-light red than crimson traffic light. also, i recently went vegan. i think that this might actually be the real deal! maybe dandruff shampoo really is the answer well i've only been using dandruff shampoo for like 3 days so i'll post ina week and say if it's gotten any better. bye all!! xoxo

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

I've been using it for about a week now and not noticed any improvement

I wouldn't usually expect anything to happen that quick but a lot of people here have said they noticed a difference in days!

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

I have had KP for most of my life. I tried a number of things, including antibiotics (which worked temporarily) and salicylic acid (which worked OK, but left a very bad taste in my mouth). About a month ago I started just using regular Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo with terrific results.

I take a shower to wet myself and then rub it all over - especially the effected areas. I turn off the shower for a few minutes to let it work (and save water), then simply rinse. I was told by my dermatologist that rubbing it with a loofah or wash cloth just makes it worse, so I don't do anything but use the shampoo. This has been a great relief, both for me and my daughter who has the same condition. I have not been this smooth since I was a little kid - which was a long time ago. It is definitely worth a try.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

Croqueteer,

The active ingredient in Head and Shoulders is zinc.

pyrithione zinc - An organometallic compound and a derivative of the naturally occurring antibiotic aspergillic acid with antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-seborrheic effects.
From: Head & Shoulders Drug Information : Medications.com

It also contains lauryl sulphate, which is found in most commercial shampoos, and strips hair (and skin) of the natural oils, hence, it may be drying.

The important thing is that it makes a difference for you, it is readily available and it is affordable.

How severe would you rate your KP -- mild, moderate or severe? Also, how old is your daughter? I assume you have OK'd this with your doctor to apply Head and Shoulders to her skin regularly.

How many times a week do you do this procedure? It could be a simple solution for many. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

Given what I have seen here, I would rate my KP to be mild with regular irritating flare-ups. My daughter is similar. I have been doing this for a month, almost on a daily basis - every time I shower. My daughter has not started this yet, though the I will keep on top of the drying issue. The dermatologist suggested the Salicylic acid for her as well, though it hasn't been particular useful. No he did not OK the Head & Shoulders, though I outside of the skin drying, I doubt that it has many side effects. She only has the problem on her arms/shoulders, so it might just be a case of using Head and Shoulders for her head and shoulders :-).

Thanks,

David

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

There are 2 different kinds of Head & Shoulders available on the market:

A complete line containing Pyrithione Zinc (Blue cap and white bottle) and the other one with Selenium Sulfide (Blue cap and Blue bottle).

The Selenium one is a stronger treatment.

My treatment:
Daily scrubbing with Homemade Salicylic Acid Scrub; soap: homemade vegetable glycerin & essential oils. I always moisturize with organic oils. Omega 3 supplements from Mercury Free Fish Oil. Arms 100% clear.

As of January 2010: My KP has returned but this time on my thighs and a little bit on the sides of my body. Maybe it is stress related or the fact that I left my skin without exfoliating on December.

Also have psoriasis which Derm prescribed for short term use Clobetasol.
As of Jan 2010: I'm back on Clobetasol for a month.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

I started rubbing some Head and Shoulders on my arms for the past couple of days. I'm currently using the Pyrithione Zinc kind since I was already using that to wash my hair. I'll post back here in a couple of weeks to let everyone know if i see a difference with my KP.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

I haven't checked this forum in awhile. Strangely enough, without even reading this thread, I've started doing the same thing!

I have a weird lip peeling problem, and I read somewhere that dandruff shampoo helps with that, so I thought that it might be an exfoliating thing that might be able to help KP. I started using this with my loofah instead of regular soap. Not a lot of improvement so far, but I'm also using the less strong H&S (with zinc).

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

What about for flat spots? My KP is flat and it's brown and it's all over my entire leg. Like every pore is a flat spot on my thighs and calves. I actually use head and shoulder daily but for my hair. I'll start giving it a try on my legs starting tomorrow.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

Noobie,

Side effects:

What side effects may I notice from receiving Pyrithione Zinc?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
• lack of healing of the skin condition
• severe redness or irritation of the skin after using pyrithione zinc

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
• minor skin irritation

From Pyrithione Zinc bar soap or shampoo: Information from Answers.com

Pyrithione zinc has few known side effects, but in rare instances products that contain it may cause skin irritation. Pyrithione zinc has not been shown to cause birth defects or to cause problems in nursing babies. There are no indications that its effect on children or older adults is different from any other group, and no adverse interactions with other medicines are known.

DermaHarmony ingredients — Pyrithione zinc – An antimicrobial agent

I hope this helps.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

When I joined this site, I had great progress with oil pulling(using soybean oil). More excellent progress with my daily sugar scrubs (1/2 cup sugar 2 tsp. olive oil) But as mentioned at that time... I am not so high maintenance and I have been outside of my element as I have been overseas and if there hasn't been one self-maintenace interruption there has been another...ranging from care packages being held absurdly long in customs to plumbing and heating problems which landed me without normal shower usage but washing up instead for an extended period of time.

Ignoring all of that, I popped back in because this particular thread made me curious when I saw it the last time I posted. I didn't do shampoo. I decided to start using my face products on my legs and use exfoliating bath gloves with the products. I have seen a fast improvement over the past week. I am willing to keep this one up because it is not too far out of the ordinary from what I usually do when washing. I can't get into all that active ingredients discussion or anything like that.

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't. My products were purchased where I am and I don't understand the Ingredient information because it is in their language but I can show you the products.
http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/imag...andclear_a.jpg
I am only using the wash and the moisturizer on my legs.

The only other thing I am doing is taking the GNC Women's Hair, Skin, & Nails Vitamins but I was taking those before I messed around with the face products on my legs.

Not saying it will work for anybody here at all. Just thought I'd share it in case someone wants to try it.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

LDRAJ - Clean and Clear products here in the US usually have a bit of salicylic acid in them. Salicylic acid is a chemical exfoliant but also has the benefit of being aspirin, basically, so it also has a somewhat anti-inflammatory effect which is helpful for some of us. So I'm not all that surprised that it may help your legs and arms. I've been known to use it on my arms and legs too at times, particularly for the soothing effect - I sometimes use the "Deep Action" kind that also has menthol in it but no benzoyl peroxide.

Re: Dandruff Shampoo

I have just had a bath, and used Head and Shoulders on my KP. I can say that with one use, my KP alba on my chest is significantly reduced, the skin is almost silky. (almost!) If you catch it in the light you can still see some clear bumps, but the skin itself is smooth as a whistle. On the KP with redness, my legs and arms, there is some smoothness but there is still an aggressive redness (the bit i hate, i could probably deal with just bumps). I think this will take more work.

While the skin was still wet, I smothered my arms, legs and chest in Nivea with Almond Oil & Vit E.

I am encouraged by this, especially as the shampoo is so cheap. Hope that is of interest.

Zaz
