Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
DtoB,
Good luck with staying on the diet. Whenever you are tempted, just remember, what is more important: a piece of pumpkin pie or the end of candida (which may mean the end of KP). Some of us have got to stick with this diet to see if no candida means no KP. I'm glad you stayed with OP. It can only do good things for your internal health. kebod |

Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
I just wanted to respond to that last comment. My sister had KP on the back of her upper arms from the time she was around 9 to around 15 and it completely went away. She is about 38 now and has the most beautiful skin and never had another trace of KP again. I on the other hand never had it when I was growing up, probably started for me at about 19 and has slowly progressively gotten worse.

What is Oil Pulling?
To answer Phoot,
Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic health practice from India. It is believed to remove toxins from the mouth which would otherwise be absorbed into the bloodstream. It is also thought that omega oils are absorbed sublingually. To do oil pulling, put one tablespoon of recommended oil (sunflower, untoasted sesame, avocado, coconut) in your mouth when your stomach is empty. Many people do this first thing in the morning, before they eat or drink anything. Slowly move the oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes. Then spit the oil down the toilet or bathroom sink, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (sea salt is best), brush your teeth, and drink 1-2 glasses of water. Oil pulling has helped people who do not have severe KP. It seems to diminish bumps (my lessened by 90%), but doesn't always do much for the redness. However, those here with KP have also reported less menstrual discomfort, more energy, softer skin all over, much better oral health, and no more bad breath. Some report decreased allergies symptoms, to the point that allergy meds are no longer needed, and clearer sinuses. A few have zero results from oil pulling and assume if it can't help them, it can't help anyone else. As with all solutions for KP, what helps some of us doesn't help everybody. KP seems to be a disorder that may have different causes, therefore, different remedies. Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
Well, although skeptical, I'm desperate. So, in hopes of similar results to many of the posts that I've read, I'm planning to try it. I'll buy my oil and sea salt tomorrow and let you know about my progress.
My keratosis pilaris just appeared suddenly at the age of 24 and I could deal with/ignore it when it was on the back of my arms, but it has now spread to my entire arms, shoulders, and worst of all, my cheeks and face. After clearing up my acne, my face now looks even worse than it used to thanks to KP! I miss having smooth skin! Any encouragement in this endeavor will be much appreciated! |

Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
Kristen,
Do you have just bumps, or redness as well? Oil pulling helps more with bumps than redness, though some here have reported less redness with OP. Please allow 3-4 weeks to see a difference, and be aware of other changes you may experience, such as whiter teeth or easier periods. Also, are you paying attention to your diet -- no junk food, etc.? Everything works together -- oil pulling, daily exercise, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and a nutritious diet all support better health. Please let us know if oil pulling helps and what other benefits you see. kebod |

Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
I have some redness on my cheeks and the backs of my arms, but the rest of my arms and shoulders are just bumpy. My diet is definitely healthy, but could always be better. I eat all the "good" foods like salmon, almonds, green tea, pomegranate, spinach, whole grains, etc.
My exercise regimen is spotty, but I'm in good shape. I run for more than an hour at least once a week. I've run two half-marathons and I'm running another one in March. So, I could improve, but I'm much healthier now than I was in high school when my face and skin was clear! |

Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
Kristen,
I eat very well, also, but still have some bumps. Organic food is not available where I live, and I wonder how much of my skin bumps are due to pesticides and other chemical in/on the food that my body is trying to eliminate through the skin. Yesterday I passed a smoker on the street, and found myself inhaling his very nasty cigarette smoke. Yuck! Then I went to the gas station and was aware of how strong the gasoline fumes in the air were. Surely I was inhaling that, also. I think all this crud becomes too much for our kidneys to discard, and then the skin, our second cleansing organ, has to go to work. As unsightly as the bumps and redness are, our skin is doing us a favor by getting rid of toxins, in the form of KP, acne and boils. By the way, I had clear skin in high school, too. It wasn't until my early 20's when I saw KP appear. Perhaps, by that point, the kidneys are doing all they can, and the skin has to help with the cleansing. Just my thoughts.... kebod |

Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
Great! Are you sure it is untoasted sesame oil?
One tablespoon may seem too much at first. If it does, start with one teaspoon and gradually increase the amount. I use 2 teaspoons instead of one tablespoon because I have a small mouth. Also, if 20 minutes seems too long, just pull for 5 or 10 minutes -- whatever feels right -- and gradually increase the time up to 20 minutes. Oh, one last thing, try not to sneeze or laugh while pulling .kebod |

Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
Yeah, it's very light colored, so it's untoasted. I saw a bottle of sesame oil at the store that was very dark, so I made sure not to buy that one.
I'll see how long I can last (hopefully I can do at least 10 minutes to start. It'll be interesting to have to keep my mouth closed for that long and breathe through my nose. |

Re: Cured at last with oil pulling
Hello! I am new in the forum and like you have been suffering with KP, mine since college. My KP is on and off. At times, my skin feels smoother but not necessarily out of it. But at times it's really awful and itchy especially when it is cold. I live in a tropical place and sometimes its really warm and humid so we had to blast our airconditioning but that doesn't help me with my KP, if at all it became worst.
I joined the forum to get more insight especially with the cure. I've visited different dermatologists to find cure but unfortunately find myself disappointed because noone can really help me with my problem. I've discovered that Aveeno lotion helped lessen the condition. I am quite interested with the natural cures and was so glad I found this forum in the net. The oil pulling seems interesting but the thing is I am 7 months pregnant. While progressing through my pregnancy, I've noticed my KP getting worse. If I do the oil pulling wouldn't it affect my baby? The oil seems harmless to me but would still like to get some insight especially with my condition. |
