You know, I've been battling with sinus congestion/cold, I don't know what, this week. It's been awful. I finally just looked at Coconut Oil in the nutritiondata.com website and that site says it's very inflammmatory. ack! I'd been using it again for my second oil pull daily for over a week now and I'm inclined to think it hasn't helped my congested sinuses. Grapeseed oil is inflammatory too! erck! I'm bummed about that one cause it's supposed to have lots of vitamin A. I guess since I'm highly flammable (jk) looks like I can still go between sunflower, avocado, apricot kernel and almond oils. I can't do olive but it's also listed as anti-inflammatory for anyone who cares...

BD, I was aware of that rating, but I interpreted it as coconut oil being inflammatory if it was ingested, meaning swallowed, eaten, which it isn't when you pull. Also, if you look at the rating, as big as that number is, it is for 1 cup of coconut oil. If you pull with 1 tablespoon, I doubt you swallow that much.
On the plus side, coconut oil is high in caprylic acid, a candida fighter, and eating up to four tablespoons a day is reputed to prevent or control candida. http://www.coconut-connections.com/candida_symptoms.htm http://users.mrbean.net.au/~wlast/candida.html http://www.coconutdiet.com/candida.htm The second link listed above links candida to sinus congestion. As I am dealing with a candida overgrowth myself, coconut oil is my first choice for pulling, and I and maintain clear sinuses. All that being said, you are the best judge of how your body responds to each of the different oils. We each should listen and pay attention to our own body's response and learn which oil is best for us, and it sounds like you are paying attention. I am going to ask Molly if she knows anything about coconut oil's contribution to sinus clearing or congestion. Thanks for your comments on this. I hope you are able to have clear sinuses very soon! Please post again and tell us of your sinus change with a different oil. kebod |

kebod- what is different between absorption and ingestion? really- having the oil in our mouth we absorb nutrients from it through our skin. I'm just saying this because I have reacted to coconut oil with allergic welts. I'm not ingesting it but it absorbed by my system. so if not the famous coconut, then what? I am using sesame right now and it has made my skin oils more tolerable. I haven't checked out the op website yet but will soon.

I've used sunflower/flax combo now for about 2.5 weeks plus a little oregano oil in it most days but stopped after 2 weeks. I also did Oil of Oregano internally for 2 weeks then stopped as per most recommends along with doing a fluid fast for the first day or 2 I was on it. First day it was kind of sickening anyway plus I had a fever still so I only wanted liquids. I have then done a limited diet using spelt and buckwheat as my main grains, lots of mustard greens fresh and cooked! etc.. A couple of things I do differently than some because of the severity of my sinus reactions is I do continue to use Bragg's ACV for its enzymes. My sinuses are quite clear this AM, and I had just stopped my 2 wks of OOO this past Friday. My skin is healing back up a bit, I got a few welts but nothing like the herx effect when I started OP. There's been a heat wave here which usually means lots of inflammed bumpy patches but this time, I barely have any! I did have a fever a couple weeks ago which proibably didn't help and I had even resorted to a decongestant the day before my OOO arrived. I actually got the OOO just for my ear but then when I found myself having completely blocked sinuses AGAIN I figured, WTF, let me go whole hog on this one. If I had just gone to a local GP or ENT they would have given me anti-biotics again which I want to avoid. ENTs around Minneapolis are starting to treat chronic rhinosinusitis with anti-fungals so it is catching on in wastern med, just not quite up to my neighborhood. Quote:

The difference between absorbtion and ingestion, as it relates to oil pulling, is that with absorbtion, nutrients on a very small level pass through the mouth tissue. Ingestion means we are actually swallowing the oil, so it passes through our digestive system, just like eating food. Whenever there are reactions or problems with an oil (or any other procedure) stop using it and try to figure out what the problem is.
Are the welts inside your mouth? Also, is the oil of a known brand and organic? Does the sesame oil agree with you? Other oils to use would be sunflower oil and avocado oil. I have just started using grapeseed oil, and like it, though coconut remains my favorite. I hope you write again and that you have found an oil that agrees with you. kebod |

brand: Omega Nutrition, certified organic. the welts aren't in my mouth- one formed beside my nose on day 4 of the coconut oil and then 5 days later a smaller one formed under my ear- on the same side of my face. they are almost gone now.. 2 weeks later. the sesame seems to be fine.

When you both refer to welts, do you mean boils? Boils can happen shortly after one starts oil pulling, when toxins come to the surface.
Omega Nutriton is the brand I use. I like it. Sorry it doesn't agree with you. kebod |

BD, no, I've never tried pumpkin seed oil. I'll put it on my list for my next shopping trip to the States (I live in Mexico).

I don't really understand what they are. they are a bump that forms, it feels like a deep lump in the layer of skin- like a giant pea. red, slightly raised. sometimes it hurts/aches. there isn't a head that forms- like a pimple.. forms over about 3 days then it slowly shrinks away over 2 weeks.
I've had a boil of sorts- likely an ingrown hair- formed on a nerve end, painful! I had to go to the doctor to have it drained & packing inserted and a whole lot of embarrassment. at 160 lbs 5'8" I wouldn't think weight had anything to do with it. I got heavier with pregnancy and never got one again and it's been 9 yrs. what I get on my face is more like acne- it comes with hormone changes when I've eaten certain foods. I personally don't think it's a positive reaction to those foods. Last edited by dogwood77; 08-01-2007 at 12:21 AM.. Reason: adding info |

I am reading these posts and others about KP, and i am excited to start this OP you all talk about.
i am also curious as to wether or not i should stay on the acne meds i am currently on or if i should leave them and test this out by itself. i am going to start off with sunflower oil and possibly use some type of topical oil for my skin.. |

I have not read of any problems with doing oil pulling and taking medications. This would be your decision if you want to drop the meds to test OP. It may take 3-4 weeks to see skin improvements, though other benefits may happen first. Be aware of your oral health -- gums, teeth, tongue, breath freshness. OP affects the mouth first.
Good luck and please keep in touch. kebod |
