Tanning, a do or don't?

I am 15 and often tan outside. I recently went to my derm for my mild-severe KP and very sensitive skin. I asked if there were any precautions I should take for tanning. She told me that tanning may help KP for a short period but overall is bad for it. (something about damageing blod vessels closer to the skin whichj will only make the KP redder). She said many people believe tanning to be some sort of treatment but in realitly it only covers the redness slightly and sunscreen helps smooth the arms slightly. She recomended putting alot of sunscreen (at least spf 30) on my KP. If any one has more information or other opionions on tanning, i would love to hear them.

Tanning works for me. Helps conceal kp better. Both indoor & outdoor tanning. Does come back, but not as much as if I wouldn't be tanning. Got to tell you though, I don't tan very often..

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

Moderate sun tanning, like 5-10 minutes a day, is healthy. Tanning salons are not. The rays they emit are so much stonger than sun rays, that people who use them 10 or more times a year are seven times more likely to develop melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

Both ways of tanning have some effects of some sort. But if you're tanning out in the sun, I'd say wear some sort of protective sunscreen if you plan to stay out for a while. The sun is healthy though. Not excessive amounts, but yes. It will also help conceal kp much better.

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

I tried a fake tan moisturizer before, just made it worse. Darkened my skin, but the red parts just got even more red.

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

tanning is a cover up for KP which really works, but it will always still be there under the tan, just alot less noticable.

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

I try to go out for 10-15 minutes a day and tan and it seems to help my severe KP quite a lot.

I have weird skin, I rarely burn and I tend to stay pretty pale... But even so I've noticed a dramatic improvement.

If you're curious about it working for you, I would suggest looking at your driving arm. Most people who have to sit in the car a lot will have one arm that gets more sun than the other. If that arms KP is any better than the other, tanning will probably work for you.

Just remember to exfoliate before going out and to never stay out for more than a few minutes without sunscreen. If you do wear sunscreen, I would recommend showering as soon as your done because the sunscreen can clog your pores, and that's no good for KP at all.

Another thing that might help is applying aloe to your skin afterwords. Aloe is great for your skin and general health and will help you feel soft and refreshed after sun exposure.

Good luck!

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

Small remedies can be done at home itself. These are natural, safe and work the BEST. You can use tomato juice and apply it on face for at least 10 minutes or use turmeric paste if you happen to get it. Dr. Maegan Davis can suggest you some natural ways to balance your hormones to cure skin related issues if they are related to hormones.

bioidentical hormones | female hormone balance | hormone imbalance symptoms

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

Tanning is great for me, also. I think there is more at work here than just our skin becoming darker in color. Sun tanning boosts our Vitamin D.

...evidence has accumulated that vitamin D plays a key role in the immune system.
from: Can Vitamin D Cure the Common Cold? - VitalVotes - articles.mercola.com

More and more, I am starting to think that a strong immune system may be key to reducing KP.
Ways to strengthen the immune system include avoiding antibiotics and taking probiotics, getting adequate sleep and reducing sugars of all type.

My treatment: Oil pulling daily; candida diet (minimum of carbs, no sugars); omega-3 from canned salmon and sardines; sun exposure 10-15 minutes, 3 days a week, without sunblock; program to strengthen immune system; probiotic supplements; lots of water; moderate daily exercise; exfoliation with epsom salts and sugar several times a week. KP reduced 99%. If I go "off diet" -- grains, sugars, etc. -- or stop oil pulling, KP returns.

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

I live in New England, so I experience some pretty extreme seasons. I noticed that in the winter my KP was a lot more noticable than in the summer when I was able to tan. I have really fair skin, and I burn easily so I was scared to go tanning. But finally I tried it. I go once or twice a week in the winter, only for about 6 minutes and I make sure to wear something with SPF. I am not extremely tan from it, but I do have my usual summer color which conceals my KP.

Re: Tanning, a do or don't?

Sunlight exacerbates KP since it is excess Vitamin D that causes the condition. 3-5 minutes of sunlight provides you a sufficient amount of Vitamin D and overexposure can cause further complications with your skin. Tans can hide KP but it will not make it better. Use a KP product that works for you and also a sunscreen with an SPF of 30+. Weigh the costs of tanning and healthier skin. It's up to you to protect your skin.
