Baby with KP needs HELP! (not a sales pitch, please)

Hi,
I'm new to this site, because my 9-month old, Tori, was just diagnosed with KP. It turns out that I have it too, and never knew what it was. I just thought mine was dry skin, because it's mild (on the backs of my arms). Unfortunately, the baby doesn't have such a mild case. Hers is all over her legs and chubby cheeks.

After looking around on this site and others, it seems that the majority of "help" one receives is from people who have products to sell. I'm obviously willing to buy a product that works, but I am confused as to why there aren't more solutions out there besides "buy my cream, it works".

Can anyone tell me what ingredients I should be AVOIDING for my daughter? Is there a product you can buy in your local stores that would help? I currently use Mustela Dermo-Cleansing Gel for Hair and Body (especially for newborns). I've been using it on both my daughters (I also have a two year old) since before I knew about the KP. The dermatologist told me to use the Eucerin/Aquaphor baby cream on her legs and cheeks twice a day (it's similar in texture to Vaseline).

Any help you could give me would be great. I'd love to hear from parents who have tried over-the-counter products and had success... if there are any.
Thanks,
Robin

Re: Baby with KP needs HELP! (not a sales pitch, please)

Overall, keratosis pilaris is described as a condition of childhood and adolescence. Although it often becomes more exaggerated at puberty, it frequently improves with age. However, many adults have keratosis pilaris late into senescence. Approximately 30-50% of patients have a positive family history. Autosomal dominant inheritance with variable penetrance has been described.

There is no cure for KP, and the best advice I can give is you to try the recommended treatment of skin specialist specializing on children as young as yours. Trying over the counter solution could be putting your toddler into serious harm. This is not all solution will work for every case and KP should be treated on case by case basis by a skin specialist.

Re: Baby with KP needs HELP! (not a sales pitch, please)

My daughter is 14 months, and I dread the day when she develops Kp. Because of the severity of mine, I am almost certain she will. I actually have felt a few little bumps here and there, but she has mild exzema and it's easy to confuse them at that early stage. Anyways, I use Aveeno exzema relief cream for babies on her entire body, It's a nice thick cream with no fragrance. I have used Eucerine intensive relief lotion on her and it works very well too. It is not for babies, but she had no reaction at all to it and it moisturizes very well. You may want to try these products for moisturizing. Good luck to you, and remember that there are many parents out there in your shoes!

Re: Baby with KP needs HELP! (not a sales pitch, please)

My son was diagnosed with KP when he was 1 and he has it on his arms, legs and cheeks. He doesn't notice it at all. The pediatric dermatologist recommended using a heavy, sensitive-skin moisturizer to alleviate the condition ( = greasy baby), but I have found that certain foods (foods I started feeding him at one year old) seem to make the condition flare; avoiding these foods makes the condition barely detectable, which puzzles the dermatologist, but he's sticking with his KP diagnosis and agrees with avoiding the problem foods.

Since it isn't always possible to avoid the problem foods, if his KP flares up, I use Topricin Junior (non greasy and good for cuts and bruises as well), Weleda Baby soap and basically don't worry about the condition. If he has a flare on his face the day before photos or some gathering and I feel bothered by his appearance, the dermatologist recommended using a bit of hydrocortisone cream on the area. I don't like to go that route, but have done so once or twice for photos. My little boy is sometimes bumpy. He's not bothered by it, so I try not to be bothered by it either (read: I don't let him know that I am bothered by it).

Good luck!!!

Re: Baby with KP needs HELP! (not a sales pitch, please)

Hello, I have a 13 month daughter that has been diagnosed with KP last month. I have noticed the bumps as early as 6 months on her. 3 different pediatricians told me different things, I finally saw a dermatologist and he said it's KP. I have been using AmLactin, got it at Walgreen's and it seems to make it smoother but it does not go away. BDarke you mention foods, I believe as well that certain foods aggravate the condition, have you been able to pin point which? Her condition started after she started on foods. Is there any other creams/lotions that you Mom's are using that is helping your little ones?

Thank you,
Ava's Mom

Ava's Mom,

Milk products (cheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream) seem to aggravate my son's KP.

It boggles my mind sometimes that this puzzles dermatologists when the same thing is well known for eczema (that certain foods can make it worse) and KP and eczema are being linked by scientists in genetics, etc...

In our family it's gluten that causes the worse aggravation of skin conditions as a secondary issue from celiac disease. Dairy too but somewhat less.
