Hi, I am new to this website and was hoping to get some advice about a condition my son has developed which has been diagnosed as Keratosis Pilaris. It began 4 months ago on his legs - from below his diaper to his ankles - not red as such, but little pimples with a protruding white-head now and then. After about a month or so we noticed his arms blushed after most day sleeps and within a week the bumps (pimple like as described above) were now visible on his arms. Within a week of this happening his cheeks began blushing and the pimples began to show but to a lesser extent. I am now seeing a few bumps on the tops of his ears... As you can probably sense this has been relatively distressing for my famliy as he is only 1 year old... I went to a dermatologist recently and he suggested it was KP but that he had never seen it as condensed on the arms. It is visible from the wrist to sholder (upper side not lower arm).
In receiving this diagnoses I was also told it is a hereditary condition (i haven't got it and neither does dad, but apparently dads sister had something similar) which has no cure To help with symptoms I was told to use a cleanser called Cetaphil and to Loofah him in a cool bath at night. I started this 2 nights ago and as of this evening the rash on his arms seems so much worse. I wanted to ask if anyone here with KP has had the same reaction and if so was there was any other safe remedies I could look at for my son given that he is only 1 year old. Looking forward to hearing from you... JB |

Re: My Son has been diagnosed with KP.. he is 1.
I saw it on my daughter when she was 3. It was there a few months and went away. I remember feeling so bad for her. My husband and myself both have it. I guess it's our strong English and Irish backgrounds. I think he will too grow out of it. Don't worry just use the lotion and baths. I really think it will go away.

Re: My Son has been diagnosed with KP.. he is 1.
jbeaven,
Be careful with a loofah. Infants' skin is so much more sensitive than adults'. And be sure not to use anything with AHA on him. AHA is an acid -- way to harsh for children. I suggest you read as much as you can on Parents' Corner, under General Discussion. There you may find remedies others are using with success and will have the opportunity to comment and question with other parents. I hope you find something that helps your son. kebod |

Re: My Son has been diagnosed with KP.. he is 1.
My daughter is 18 months, she has had these bumps on her arms and legs, and blushed cheeks since she was about 6 months old. We thought it was the little baby pimples they get, but it started getting more red, and they look awful, and rough. My husband has this too, its on his arms and legs and face and he has had it for as long as he can remember. I've read it can go away on its own, and often by 30, well he's 28 and it looks worse than ever, but if you also have very dry skin (like both my husband and daughter do), it can be worse for them. I hope to get some answers from this site, I hope you find some too. (We go to the dr tomorrow to be diagnosed and hopefully get some suggestions and creams to calm the redness a bit.)
