Smile Huge Improvements KP on Face!

My 7 year old daughter has had Kp on her face and arms since she was a baby. I haven't really worried about her arms, but her face has gotten really bad at times. I have tried a million creams and seen 3 different dermatologists. Her KP had been getting better on her face and I thought maybe she was outgrowing it, when it came back with a vengeance this fall! What made it worse was she has gotten to the age when she started noticing and caring and kids started saying things to her at school.

So... I have been on a mission to figure out what had changed and why it was bad again. I realized it seemed to have gotten worse once she went back to school and started eating the school lunch, which includes lots of cow's milk.

I have always thought she had a mild milk allergy, so I have given her other products, but she really enjoys the cows milk at school and started drinking it regularly. I decided while she was home for winter break I would eliminate or at least reduce her dairy. It's been a little over a week and her face is ALMOST CLEAR!!!!!! IT IS AMAZING! I know this goes against everything you read and hear about the condition, but for us it has been a wonderful surprise. I have also been putting Neutrogena Healthy Skin face lotion on her 2x a day. It does have Alpha-hydroxy in it, but it does not seem to irritate her skin. FYI, I had been putting the cream on her face prior to eliminating dairy and it was still bad.

KP is such a frustrating condition that I just wanted to share my experience with all of you! Best wishes!

Re: Huge Improvements KP on Face!

Denise,

This makes sense to me for two reasons:
1. Dairy is often the culprit for food allergy, and allergies are manifest in the body in different ways, including inflammation. (Wheat and soy are other common allergy causes.)
2. I am convinced there are many causes of KP, hence, many different remedies.

Congratulations for finding the cause of KP in your daughter. I hope her skin stays clear.

Re: Huge Improvements KP on Face!

Thats very interesting....are there any options for milk like switching to lactaid or something else. My 6 year year old has it pretty bad sometimes inflamed looking on her cheeks and she drinks alot of milk. Loves cereal. She has alot of bowel issues to so I may have to try different milk for that reason also. I am also looking for acidophilus for her to take. The ones I have a too big..maybe there is other forms of it. Any comment on what is a good milk alternative would be greatly appreciated.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

My daughter likes rice milk on her cereal, but you can also try soy milk and for a treat I get the chocolate soy milk. I guess you have to be careful because a lot of kids are also allergic to soy products. Cutting out diary is hard, but now a days there are lots of alternatives. I have found a chewable acidophilus by Jarrow called "Yum-Yum dophilus" both my girls like to take them.
Best Wishes!
Denise

Re: Huge Improvements KP on Face!

Hi Denise, where did you find the yum yum dophilus? I am guessing not at a regular store. I am going to get some different milk today and I just picked up some Cetaphil cleanser. I will be curious to see if there is any difference using that verses Aveeno. I could deal with the KP on her arms because I had it on my arms until my mid 20's but the face is so depressing. Thanks so much for replying with the info. I appreciate it.

Re: Huge Improvements KP on Face!

I am not sure where you live, but I got it at Whole Foods which is a grocery store chain in CA which sells health food! My daughter had it on her legs, arms and face! As she has gotten older it has gone away on her legs and I don't worry about the arm, but the face has been hard. She really did not care much until this year when kids at school started saying things! You might also want to try the Neutragena lotion-it has given me the best results!
Take care!

Re: Huge Improvements KP on Face!

I got some chewable acidophilus from GNC and its strawberry flavor. Also just swithced to lactaid milk. I dont know if thats even ok I may try soy. Just started using Cetaphil cleanser and aquaphor for moisture. Its definitley looking better on her cheeks but the weather hasnt been so bitter the past few days so that could also be. It really could be hard to tell what works best because you panic and try a bunch of things at once like I am doing. I will also be looking into the neutrogena.
