14 month old child - any advice?

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum. My son was just diagnosed with KP on his arms, and KP Rubra Faceii. I have KP, and I feel horrible that I passed this on to him.

Anyway, I have been reading a lot of the posts, but I have not seen to many on infants. Perhaps, I am searching wrong. But, I would like to ask the parents out there if they have any methods that are working on their kids?

Since he is only 14 months old, I do not wish to use steroids, or any creams with salicyclic (sp?) acid, or scrub the living daylights out of him.

It is only on his face and upper arms, and does not seem to bother him, but I'd like to try to clear it up, or keep it from getting more severe, if that's possible.

Can anyone shed light on the following suggestions from other posters?

Humidifier
Milk baths
Moisturizers - which is better Aquaphor or Eucerin or Aveeno
Scrubbing
Feeding child more Vitamin A rich foods
Butt Paste on face and arms (sounds gross?)
Dove Nutrium Body wash & Soap (will it burn his eyes?)
Aveeno Colliodal baths
Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser

Sorry for all of the questions - any help is most appreciated.

Hi Denine,

Welcome to the KP forum. I don't have answers to your questions, but I hope someone here does. If no one answers you here, please go to "Parents' Corner" (under Communty Forums) and ask there. Many parents with children of all ages are sharing solutions and comments. Feel free to join any ongoing discussions there with your questions.

Wink Re: 14 month old child - any advice?

My daughter 9 months old has KP on her shoulders arms & lags.
I have been using
"Gold Bong Ultimate Softening Lotion"
Which works the best out of everything Ive tried. &

Ammonium Lactate Lotion12%(prescription)

That works well too & doesn't seem to burn her or anything.I only use it once every other day though.

Every now & then I'll use Saint Ines Apricot scrub on her(if it really gets bad) but I don't rub her down too hard. It's got a lot of moisture in it as well.

I also put actual oatmeal in a washcloth & tie it up & throw it in the bath with her....thats works good
As does the humidifier. Not that the effects are noticeable from either one (that much)

I have tried the butt cream (no luck wit that)

I wouldn't say it's all cleared up but it's way better .It also hasn't gotten any worse since I started using all of those in unison.I use the gold bond cream everyday & bath her everyday(or every other) with oatmeal.
Well,thats it, good luck!!!!
Let me know what u decided works for you k!

Red face Re: 14 month old child - any advice?

Hi,

I'm the father of a 12-month old boy and just two months ago life changed for us when he developed a pretty awful case of KP on his formerly flwaless cheeks. We are also still in the opening stages of this battle, part of which is just coming to terms with the diagnosis. We have been very disappointed with our HMO dermatologist who simly prescribed a bunch of different moisturizers as well as RetinA. We have been using that but are very nervous about it. We have placed a humidifier next to his crib and are now in the process of finding a new dermatologist and doing a literature search. We also cut out dairy and wheat for one month but it made no difference at all. Maybe we were ttoo impatient. I work at a helthcare company and have access to medical research databases. Whatever I can find I would happily send to you. Since our boys are in the same age range, maybe we should collaborate.

Best,

E.

Yeah you may be being too impatient. My daughter is now 12 months in two days she was diagnosed 4/5months ago.It has never cleared up compltetly but has gotten less noticable.I've come to terms with it now & can hardly see it.I'm sure you will as well.Just that when you first see it thats all you see.be patient & keep him lubed up...It'll get better

Re: 14 month old child - any advice?

My now 7 year old daughter has had KP since she was a baby, with a sever case on her face-heart breaking! I have tried everything under the sun and my father is a dermatologist! There are NO easy answers, but what I recently discovered was a link to milk and my daughter's KP. I know this goes against everything you read about the condition, but I eliminated dairy from her diet and within 2 weeks her face is almost clear! It is amazing. I have also been putting Neutrogena face cream with alpha hydroxide on her 2x per day, which you could dilute with a regular cream to reduce the strength for your baby's face. Honestly, I have tried every cream and the change in her diet has been a miracle! It is worth a try!!! Best wishes it is a really frustrating condition!

Re: 14 month old child - any advice?

I'm trying a dairy free diet for my 2 year old at the moment. I had thought I only had to give it a couple of weeks to decide whether or not it was making any difference but was just talking to some people yesterday who are dairy free for other reasons who reckoned that it needed three months. For gluten/wheat it may take even longer for the system to be cleared and a difference to be seen. Well, as I say, they hadn't changed their diet due to KP so maybe it's different. I don't think that a dairy free diet has made any difference to my daughter after a couple of weeks and I was going to give up, but a couple of people have comented that my daughter's face looks clearer. They haven't seen how extensive it is on her buttocks - that's just gradually got worse and worse recently I think. But I was heartened by people's comments about her face so I'm going to give it a bit more time. There's a fair amount of lactose intolerance in my family apparently (that I'm only finding out about since talking about our dietary experiments with my daughter!) so still hopeful that it could be a solution, despite dermalogists' best efforts to dissuade me!
