Cool Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

Hi there,
I'm a KP sufferer and so is my 2 year old son- it popped up on him about 5 months ago on his arms and legs- exactly where I have it.
I keep reading these posts about AHA's on these babies and it is making me crazy. I use Amlactin personally and it works for me- it isn't a miracle cure but it helps. Yes it stings- if it stings us- it is going to sting your kids and why put them through that. According to my pediatrician you can burn their delicate skin when using this stuff alot and for prolonged periods of time. I hold out no hope of him growing out of this because I never did.
Please stop putting acids on the skin of your babies and prescription meds aren't the solution either. None of us know a solution- my son was tested for allergies- guess what- he has none!! This is a genetic skin condition with treatments but no cure.
I use EVCO on my son and myself and that is the best thing for us. I also use handmade goats milk and shea soap with a washcloth for gentle exfoliation and then the oil after bath. During the day I like to slap a little Eucerin Creme, Aveeno unscented baby lotion, or a creme made for me with shea butter and emu oil. That's all I do. I caught this- verified with the doc- and started the regimen- my son has never had redness with his bumps like I have had and I think it could be the regimen and I started it as soon as I found it. I'm not a naturalist or anything but the things that I'm seeing on here are almost making me mad. Putting Amlactin on already irritated delicate skin- omg- ouch!!!! The bottle says NOT to use it on irritated or broken skin. These babies and kiddos do not have our tough adult skin. Sheesh- I'm sorry if I have offended any moms out there as I'm not trying to do that- I just want you all to think a bit and maybe reconsider what you are putting on the skin of these kids. I'm not trying to sell anything on here at all- this message is just a concerned kp mom with a kp kid.

Re: Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

Every parent here needs to read this post and not put anything harsh or chemical on their children without first getting their pediatrician's approval. Dannigirl has a good point -- children's skin is much more sensitive than adults'.

AHA can even harm adults' skin if not used correctly.

For anyone here considering using a product that contains AHA on their children, here is a warning from the FDA:

" It is not recommended that AHA-containing products be used on infants and children."

To read the entire warning:
FDA Backgrounder: Cosmetics Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Skin is absorbant. Skin is compromised by certain chemicals, including AHA, making it more vulnerable to ultraviolet damage from the sun, possibly making the user more at risk of skin cancer.

Children's skin is much more sensitive than adults'. I understand you are desperate to find a remedy for your children, but please don't burn tender skin.

At the least, you should not put AHA or any other chemical on your children without first getting approval from your pediatrician.

Re: Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

A product that I've read about in posts where people said this helped their Keratosis Pilaris, and didn't have an exfoliating ingredient in it, was Lubriderm.

Also, when I was a child/teen, neutrogena transparent bar soap made my Keratosis Pilaris go away 100%.

Re: Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

Thanks I will try the neutrogena on him and I have heard the same thing about Lubriderm- I think what I read was the Lubriderm with the oat extract in it.
Thanks for the info.

Re: Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

Actually, the posts I read were long before the Oat version came out, but that said, I can't say someone hasn't said the same thing about the Oat version in the Lubriderm line (as in, it wouldn't surprise me).

Re: Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

testing for allergies is an Ige reaction to foods....sensitivites is an Igg reaction to food.

a blood test can test for Igg reaction, the electrodermal test (vega test)can do Igg reaction, also the home pulse test can work, but the standard allergy test will not detect Igg.

It is good to know about allergies though, as I tested myself as well and was allergic (Ige)to nothing.

Re: Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

I have read some posts by Keratosis Pilaris sufferers where they say that by eliminating certain foods from their diet, the Keratosis Pilaris cleared up, but I think it was part of a regimen (as in, they were doing other things to clear it up, like a 2-pronged approach).

Lightbulb Re: Acids On Babies!! Oh My!!

I thought I would mention that a product that once worked for me (99-100% gone) that didn't have acids in it was bath & body works aromatherapy body lotion (I used the eucalyptus spearmint scent, and I think it may have to do with the eucalyptus...?). I saw another woman post on another board that the lavender eucalyptus was what she used & her KP was gone.

These lotions do fall in the "heavily fragranced" category, but you could do a patch test.
