Wow! Just found these forums

I am a KP sufferer myself and my 11 yr old daughter has developed it over the last year. Thankfully as I have gotten older, It has gotten better but my daughters is much worse than mine ever was.

It is quite extensive. Her back, check and arms (diagnosed by a dermatologist). It was very embarrassing for her this summer because more skin is exposed during the warmer months.

He prescribed Salex (sp?) and it does very little.

I hope to read thru the forums and see what others are finding success with.

We can put a man on the moon but we can't find a cure for bumpy skin LOL

Welcome Daelkin!

I hope that here you can find the right treatment for your daughter. Did she sun tanned during the summer? Some have found that it really helps.

What kind of soap is she using right now?

Just curious, at what age did your KP symptoms appeared?

Her KP did improve over the summer but has gotten bad again since school has started. (she did alot of swimming this summer)

She is using PanOxyl as a wash (suggested by dermatologist)

I'm not sure when mine actually started, I just remember it first in my teens.

My 20 yr old daughter has it too but not nearly as bad as my 11 yr old daughter.

My 20 yr old daughter has it on on the back of her arms. But not very bad.

Mine has improved over the last few months and I think it's because I have been using a shea oil sugar scrub every night in the shower on my arms and thighs.

I have noticed a big difference. It's not totally smooth but it's 100% better

I had my 11 yr old try it and it's not working as well (probably due to the severity of hers)

Re: Wow! Just found these forums

Thanks! So, I guess that doing some exercise, taking sun baths and swimming helped her. I was also wondering, did she swam in salt water or freshwater?

I'm asking this stuff, because some members in our forums have seen great improvement by doing this:
  • exercising
  • sun bathing (sun tanning)
  • exposing to salt
Now that you tell me that you have been seeing some improvement with scrubbing, you can apply to your daughter some scrub too. You can try salt scrubs- some people make them at home with dead sea salts, regular salt or Epsom Salts*.
* This salts are great because of the magnesium content. You can search our forums for the word: Epsom Salts or scrub to see what our members recommend.

After scrubbing, she should apply a moisturizer. I'm not sure which one to recommend but I know that some of our members can tell you.

About Panoxyl=it is a benzoyl peroxide product. It is supposed to treat acne and kill bacteria that causes it and reduces fatty acids in your skin. KP is not acne (I know, I'm not a dermatologist), but looking at what really causes KP (excessive production of Keratin that clog pores) I can see that this product maybe is not working at all. Also it can dry out your daughter's skin even more as it removes the fatty acids. One of Panoxyl's products contain SA, maybe that can help with redness...

So, I encourage you to browse our forums and see what have worked for LOTS of our members. Sometimes I think that they know more of how to treat this condition better than dermatologist, LOL. It is true, some of them have been living with KP symptoms for 25-30 years. They can "smell" or discern from distance good products from bad ones.

Note: My English is not so good, as you would notice...

Re: Wow! Just found these forums

Elsa,
Thank you for your replies. My daughter swam in the local pool (chlorene sp?)

Yes, the panoxyl is mainly for acne. She has some KP that causes red pus cysts so he thought it would help those.

I will try the salt scrub on her. The one shea butter/sugar one that I am using doesn't seem to help her but the salt might.

I'll keep you posted with any progress.

Re: Wow! Just found these forums

Thank you

You can also read Turquoise's thread: My search is over!
She recommends dermabrasion crystals.

If exfoliating doesn't work for your daughter, don't give up! Maybe you'll find other alternatives like a change in your daughter's diet or oil pulling.

We are trying oil pulling right now, but we also think that changing our diet like Baronster recommends is very important and should accompany whatever method you choose. It is very important to be maintain a healthy body!

Take care and we expect to hear from you and your daughter's progress.

Re: Wow! Just found these forums

I just bought the DermaDoctor line at my local Sephora store, and this doctor has developed this line called KP Duty especially for Keratosis Pilaris. I tried it for the first time last night and woke up this morning with softer arms. If it works I will let you know, but I have suffered throught this since I my first year of college. I just recently figured out what it is. I also use a salt scrub called ginger essence from Origins which can be found in a Belk. It has oils and a large grain salt that helped immensely in the summer months. I hope that helps!

Forum lag

Hiya, I have a small question. Does anyone feel a slight lag using this message board whenever they login? It can take as much as five seconds approximately for me to get the main web page.

Many thanks
