Mom with a 5yr old kp daughter

My daughter got diagnosed today, i am new to the forum and whole community of kp. I am just relieved like most to have a name for it and know its nothing too serious. She is very sensitive about it but is eager to try anything to reduce the appearance of her irritated skin. I am eager to here any helpful advice as I start helping her deal with this skin condition.

wow, thats the youngest i've ever heard it was diagnosed! I thought people were ususally diagnosed around the teenyears or as an adult! Never thoguht that it would be noticable at the age of 5!!!! If you want any tips or help you can just ask me, or anyone else because I have kp also! I was diagnosed about 3 months ago. I am 15 years old! I can tell you a little hint that helps me! I used to take really long steaming hot showers before i dicovered i had kp and that was irriataing and drying out my skin even more, but if you take cold or medium warm showers, you can take longer showers, just not blasting hot!!!! I hope that helps your daughter!

ashlee, thanks so much for the tip. I'll take any you might have. she does like to take pretty hot showers for a five year old. She'll just have to get used to a cooler shower. Her doctor says she has a pretty severe case on her arms. The kp runs from her shoulders to her wrists but is moderatly spread on her legs and mildly on the cheeks of her face. I appreciate any tips you can send my way. Thanks again, Joscy's mom

oh you're welcome!!! It's no prob!!! I feel so sorry for your daughter, she sounds like she's got it pretty bad for her age!!! There really are all kinds of different ways that you could treat kp, but i'm just trying to think of something that would be appropriate for a 5 year old! I've found that sometimes Neutrogena skin smoothing body lotion works! You can just get that at walmart or a place like that! Or you could use any lotion with Urea in it, but I should warn you that urea is a hazerdous chemical which is found inside your body, but usually people with kp don't make enough of the chemical! A natural way of helping to control kp is, drinking plenty of water, vitamin E oil, or borage oil. There is a website that you can go to for more information, this is where I got my information from; http://bioskincare.com/. Just click on Keratosis pilaris (which should be under the title of "skin healing") on the left hand side of the page and it'll give you all kinds of information on kp!!!

thanks for the website I will definitely check it out. She does drink plenty of water which is a plus, I am using the cetaphil cream and that seems to be working at least with the dryness and redness but I have questions about the exfoliation part I see and hear about on these forum threads. do you exfoliate and How or what do you use? I just dont want to make her skin more irritated and defeat the little bit of improvement I have started already on her skin. If you don't mind me asking as a teen does it get worse on your face or has it improved? I just want to try to beat it at the pass if I can. The derm said it would get better but everything i am reading in these forums tell me the exact opposite. thanks for any light you can shed on what i have to look forward to in the future. Joscy's mom

So glad I'm not alone! I just figured out tonight that KP is what my 4yo daughter has on her side. After I thought for awhile I figured out that my husband is also aflicted by it.

Hi there:

I invented a cream that helped our 5-year old son's mild Keratosis Pilaris (when he was 3 years of age), and other parents trialled it via this website. For more information, see the thread "What's worked for your kids" in the Moms Group. It's called Lacteem Keratosis Pilaris Junior.

If you would like to purchase, it is available at *****************

I also developed a formula based upon Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, that also helps children with Keratosis Pilaris, particularly when it's on the face. This one is called **** Keratosis Pilaris Oleum.

Kind regards,

Annuu

I don't mind you asking anything!!!!! it's okay! lol but my face was fairly clear when I was a child, my kp really sort of just snuck up on me as I got older. What i mean by this is, my skin was clear and soft and smooth when I was probablly your daughters age, and I don't know what age it started but my skin just started getting redder and bumpier very slowly over time! So slow I really didn't notice it until it started to get bad! My face now is red which is the rosasea, but my arms are kind of scalely and rough and they are also blotchy and red. I just started noticing this about 3 years ago. I didn't think anything of it because I just thought that it was dry skin and nothing more than that! So I tried every lotion you can think of, but finally my mom decided to take me to the derm!!! So I went and he said it was def. KP!!!! So i was researching the internet for ways to help treat my condition, and I came upon this website! And I joined. But since you said that your daughters kp has shown up at an early age, then I really don't know if it will get worse as she gets older! I predict if you just keep putting stuff on her skin and doing all kinds of different treatments maybe when she's a teen like me it'll be so faint it'll be unoticeable!!! I'm sorry I can't help you much at all! But I now since I'm a teen and most teens break out, for my breakouts I use this really great scrub thats called Deep Clean Invigorating Foaming Scrub by Neutrogena, and that helps keep pimples and breakouts from forming and also gets rid of them! It's for your face. It makes my skin alittle bit less bumpy and rough, and also takes off any dirt or extra oils on your skin. It's a shower scrub so you just put it on in the shower and scrub your face with your hands and then rinse. I like it, you may like it for your daughter, may help clear her skin alittle, but it doesn't get ride of the redness!

Your definitely not alone Maras Mommy, I realized I was the culprit and could be traced back to my mom and her father. I will say that at 37, it is practically gone there is no redness, dryness and very few bumps so long as I use warm vanilla sugar shower gel by bath and body works, and I use one of those plastic netting sponges. I just started using the same type of sponge on my daughter so I haven't seen any improvement yet but I'll keep you posted. I don't have a soap to wash her with yet. Her derm said to just use water till I find something I thought might work. She just got diagnosed 3 days ago.

yeah I use the plastic sponge thingy too! But I use a different soap. My dermatologist told me not to use bath and body work's lotion because it has a lot of those scents and alcohols to make the lotion smell good and those alcohols dry out my type of skin, kp. What kind of lotion do you use?

Smile Another helpful tip

Both of my daughters have KP. They are now just 6 and 7 yrs old and were diagnosed 3 years ago. I have had them use both tea tree oil soft soap in the shower and cream lotion afterwards. Check out the Puritan's Pride website. They have several tea tree oil products at reasonable prices. This has helped them both quite a bit. I also buy a liquid shower soap for them that does not have any dyes or scents it it. Those seemed to irritate the skin. They both also now take acidophilus capsules every day and that has made BIG difference also. One other major change that helped was changing from baths to showers and being careful of how long they are in the water. A shorter exposure to water and the use of lotion has made some improvement too. Hope this helps!!

LMARTIN,
What type of Acidopholus capsules do they take? How long did it take to see results? I have been giving my 2yr old son a teaspoon of Nature's Way probiotics for about a month - haven't seen much improvement (if any) yet. I have heard that some probiotics are better than others - maybe I don't have a good one....
One thing that I did see a big improvement with is cutting back on dairy -has anyone else seen this as well?
Thanks for a great thread!

Acidophilus

They are on milk free probiotic acidophilus, one capsule per day, and there are 2.4 billion live cells in each capsule. I have noticed a HUGE difference in live cells versus freeze dried, etc. It took about 3 months to really see a big difference, but in that time, all ear infections have disappeared, stomach ailments are almost never, as well as the improvement in the KP. One other hint, I gave up trying to find live acidophilus cells at the store and just order from Puritans Pride online now. I hope this helps!!
