Re: Mom with a 5yr old kp daughter

Hi, my daughter was diagnosed last year when she was 3, although she has had the bumps since she was 1.5yrs. I have tried a few different things, but nothing seems to really help a whole lot, Her arms are still pretty bad, however her legs and face look alot better. The dr says that it should clear up when she hits puberty. She said that you can try several different things, but there really is no cure. At this point they really dont bother her, she knows she has it, but I think it bothers me more than her! She starts school soon, so I am wondering if she will become more self-conscious of them.

Here is a photo of Rachel's arm. I took the photo last month(not just of her arm, but when I uploaded the photo to my computer I couldnt help but notice all of the bumps on her arm!) It almost has a poison ivy rash appearance to me!

It is a pretty common ailment, so I have come to find out, but when she was diagnosed, I had never heard of it! It is nice to have a place to go to share stories and see what works for other people!

AHA Warning for Use on Children

Lacteem contains AHA.

For anyone here considering using a product that contains AHA on their children, here is a warning from the FDA:

" It is not recommended that AHA-containing products be used on infants and children."

To read the entire warning:
FDA Backgrounder: Cosmetics Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Children's skin is much more sensitive than adults'. I understand you are desperate to find a remedy for your children, but please don't burn tender skin.

At the least, you should not put AHA or any chemical on your children without first getting approval from your pediatrician.

Re: Mom with a 5yr old kp daughter

Amen- kebod!!

I have a 2 year old with KP and I have it myself. I go as natural as I can looking for coconut oil in products. I switch off products but mostly I use- handmade unscented goats milk bar soap or Kirks Coco Castile Soap unscented. I use bar soap because I can lightly exfoliate him with a washcloth or my new favorite- a super soft and I mean soft soapbag- the soap goes right in and it also saves your soap. It is much softer than mine. Then I moisturize with organic extra virgin coconut oil after a bath, I also use unrefined shea butter or burt's bee's baby bee lotion, aveeno unscented baby lotion, sometimes curel ultra healing or Lubriderm with oat extract. My son was diagnosed first by me as soon as it sprouted I knew what it was- then by my pediatrician and next by a pediatric derm. He has it on arms and legs and I have used this regimen for 5 months or so and it has never (knock on wood) gotten red and inflamed. Remember gentle is better and always follow advice of your doctor- most of the time though prescription creams aren't worth it as they are expensive and a temporary fix. By the way- I'm not a naturalist by any stretch of the imagination but with kids you have to be a label reader and knowledgeable about ingredients. Another thing to remember is expensive is not always better- for example that Kirks coco castile soap is about 4.25 for 3 long lasting bars in Amazon at my grocery store its 79 cents a bar and it is amazing. I love it for myself. As adults with KP- we will put anything to try to fix our condition on our bodies- believe me like everyone else I have everything- my bathroom looks like a drugstore. But my son I'm cautious and particular because I don't want his to get worse. I do see reults on him in 5 months the "chicken skin" is much better but I'm not sure it will be totally gone. Honestly, it doesn't bother him anyway. I have had KP for about 25 years and I'm only 34 so I don't think I will grow out of it- so treat it and keep irritation down is my best advice!
Thanks for listening!
Danni

Re: Mom with a 5yr old kp daughter

Amen-danni,

my doughter was 3-4 weeks old when she had first outbreak. At that time I was told that these pimples are from hormons that she is getting through breast milk. Now, I'm not so sure it was the case. These pimples and the ones that she has now are not different. Since she got "hormon pimples" they have never went away, so I'm thinking that my doughter has KP for 10 months now.
I was so desperate today when we left derms office after he sad she has KP and told us little (it's genetic and it can't be cured), but finding this forum and reading stories and advices, I'm feeling much better and I'm thinking straight (I lost my head today and I paniced). It's not end of the world. I'm not going to use AHA lotion that I bought today. Instead, I'll read anything I can find here in threads and through the posted links and than decide what to do.
Thx danni, I found your expirience most helpfull!
