Considerations Before Eliminating Dairy
I personally have eliminated dairy from my adult diet for a few reasons and I only eat red meat maybe twice a month. I am not against eliminating dairy and meat. I am just putting this out here for parents to use as part of their evaluation. I am not a Dr, nutritionist or of any particular qualifications. The following quotes are from an article you may read in full at:
http://www.ninaplanck.com/index.php?...e=vegan_babies The author, nina planck, "...was once a vegan. But well before I became pregnant, I concluded that a vegan pregnancy was irresponsible. You cannot create and nourish a robust baby merely on foods from plants." "A vegan diet is equally dangerous for weaned babies and toddlers, who need plenty of protein and calcium. Too often, vegans turn to soy, which actually inhibits growth and reduces absorption of protein and minerals. That’s why health officials in Britain, Canada and other countries express caution about soy for babies. (Not here [in the USA], though — perhaps because our farm policy is so soy-friendly.)""An adult who was well-nourished in utero and in infancy may choose to get by on a vegan diet, but babies are built from protein, calcium, cholesterol and fish oil. Children fed only plants will not get the precious things they need to live and grow." Some KPers experiences posted here indicate that _lack_ of calcium has contributed to their KP and is obviously something to keep in mind with childrens dietary needs. just some of my background fyi - My 5 yr old is a self-styled vegetarian of the ovo-lactarian type and quite healthy, growing and with extremely mild KP that needs no special care at this point. My husband has recently adopted ovo-lactarianism also for his health and it works very well for him. (Hey there are are hundreds of millions of Hindus in the world for whom this works also.) My diet is probably a bit more toward the "blood-type" diet: type O but I haven't read the book nor do I particularly endorse that. I'm 43 years old. I was a vegan for about a year and a half in my late twenties. I was slim but my KP was terrible. When I switched back to an omnivrous diet my KP cleared up. It only resurged after childbirth. all the best - bd |
