Question 12 year old son has KP

Hi! I'm new here, and I was wondering if any of you had any advice for adolescents with KP. My son has had KP on his face all of his life, but now that he's entered puberty, it seems to have gotten worse. The lotions that his pediatrician has prescribed for KP give him acne pimples. The treatment for the acne worsens his KP.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi - your post caught my eye as I am also a mum to a Michael

It may be that your son has KPRF (Keratosis Pilaris Rubra Faciei). The symptoms are usually red KP dots on both cheeks that are mainly focused on the sides/bottom part of the cheek. This conditions causes flushing and redness - for pictures have a look at the KPRF forum as some have posted photos there. Unfortunately all KP conditions become worse in puberty

Some of the guys are trialling azealic acid at present and their skin seems to tolerate this well. Any acid type cream i.e. alpha hydroxy, retinoic or azealic will help slough off the skin and build up of keratin which cause the hair follicule to block and become inflamed. (check out posts by Dick and Derfel for this) Whereas the first two acids above can easily irritate the skin azealic seems very suitable for the sensitve face area - you may want to talk to your derm about it.

Dick has just had 'fraxel' laser treatment for his KPRF - again this is a new method of treatment and the final result of how effective this has been is not quite in yet.

I encourage you to keep looking at the KPRF forum and asking questions - a lot of the guys on their are in their 20's and are working really hard to find some solutions to this troublesome condition. I had KPRF also in my teens and twenties but now at 45 the red bumps are gone, that however does not help your son.

Anne,

Thanks for your reply. Michael has KPRF, but he also gets acne pimples. Poor guy! I've gotten him a salicylic acid scrub to alternate with the lotions for KP. Hopefully we'll be able to keep it under control until he gets out of puberty. Interestingly, the bumps and redness don't seem to deter the girls.

Re: 12 year old son has KP

I am new. This is my first post. Both of my kids have KP I think. Was on a mission to find out what was causing their bumps. Have tolerated it for a few years but suddenly my daughter (10 yrs old.) has been having crazy itching and increased bumps to her back, butt, and head. Getting lots of advice from many people. Have just found this forum a few days ago, read alot. Many questions arise from what I have read. Now realizing I have KP too and my husband (if that is what we have). I am pretty convinced that a lot of people here don't have the same thing. I am leaning towards the contagious theory and the dermomite? Seems weird how it has spread through my family. My dog even has serious skin problems. ( No joke ) Vet can't help just like the doctor can't help my kids. Bogus creams and no results. I am personally going to look into the Seabuck Thorn stuff I have read about on here. I am going to try it on me first to see if it helps. Then if it works, I will use on my family. If it helps I will let you know.
