I'm new to this group

Hello - I am new to this group and am grateful to find this website! I want to help my son, who has KP on his face. I have it on my arms, but its very mild so I've never been too concerned. My son, however, has it on his cheeks (he also has a red rash sometimes). He is five years old and is just now questioning this condition. He sometimes picks at the bumps, which concerns me.

I have been using a facial scrub (once a week) and Lac-hydrin, based on his pediatrician's recommendations. Doesn't seem to help much. I have a question for the group. Has anyone tried "Proactiv"? I see ads on TV, but don't know much about it. A dermatologist told me a young child shouldn't use products with salicylic acid, so I'll need to find out if Proactive contains that.

Thanks for any information. I look forward to working with all of you.

Evan's Mom

Evan's Mom -- Welcome to the group. I would stay away from products with salicylic acid since he's so young. Do you wash his face with a soap-free product? You might want to try Purpose (made by Johnson & Johnson). Soaps are quite drying and usually have additives which are not helpful to the condition. I use Purpose (I have mild rosacea on my face). My daughter uses Neutrogena, which has worked extremely well for her facial KP, and we have been applying the Neutrogena Bump Minimizing Lotion (which I understand is being discontinued). Lac-Hydrin never worked particularly well for us, either. I frankly don't understand why dermatologists always recommend it. You also might want to try a warm mist humidifier in his bedroom at night.

There was recently a post entitled "Stop this madness" in the mom's forum written by, I believe, Laura Katie, where she describes a regimen that has worked really well for her daughter.

Good luck.

Thanks for your response. I will try the humidifier and also look at the posting you recommended. I have a friend who sells Arbonne and I saw several people recommending their products. I'm going to try them and see what happens. I will let you know how they work out. Evan's Mom.
