Smile Newbie here.... Mom of 3 yr. old Girl *Alana* with KP?

I don't even know where to start. My daughter Alana is 3 1/2 years old and has had "BUMPS" starting on her arms since she was an infant. BTW - She is also been classified as allgeric to milk. She has been on Soy formula and Soy Milk since she was born and other soy products since she has been getting bigger. For the past 6 months she has been able to stomache reg. yogurt and maybe a piece of cheese every now and then. Could this be some cause of this?? Anyone else seen a decrease when eliminating dairy?

Alittle background..... It all started with My mother-in-law stating that I wasn't cleaning her good enough in the tub..... when I brought it up to my PED at one of her reg. checkups she immediately recognized it - she stated that her son had it also... just not as bad as Alana. ( I don't have it or if I do it is so mild, I dont see it. I asked my husband and he said he had some on the back of his arms) She briefly told me that it was an abundance production of skin cells growing and caused bumps and it was a "condition". She recommended creaming her skin. So..... I did - mainly with baby lotion etc. She never recommended seeing a DERM.

Over a year later - it is getting worse. It is now all down her arms, top (front) on her thighs. No one was ever bothered by it. Luckily she has nice Olive Skin, tans nicely even with sunscreen so she never seems red... it is just bumpy to the touch. It wasn't until Alana stated that she hated her pimples and needed to scrub when she was in the tub (again, advice from Nana). Now that she is self-consious about it at 3 1/2 and reading all of these posts - I AM SCARED to death. I purchased the lotion that my Ped. recommended (her Derm for her son) Therapeutic Nutraplus Creme (10% Urea Cream).... I just started using it and I don't see a dramatic difference. I plan on calling the PED this week for a referal to a DERM.... I want to start controlling this now if it is indeed KP. Has anyone ever used this cream?? I haven't read it anywhere around here yet. I also plan on limiting the milk products (yogurt) and trying the Neutrogena Transparent Bar soap (I have been using Ivory w/ aloe). I apologize that this post is so long. I finally have an outlet to share my thoughts on the subject. Thanks again.

Really feel for you - you must be terrified. But I think as long as you drum into her not to be self-conscious all the treatments are then just secondary. It's the self-conscious bit that is the worst - and DON'T LET HER PICK!

I would have advocated eliminating milk, but you've already done that. I would also advocate using virgin coconut oil as a moisturiser, given it's not full of chemicals for such a baby skin. But that's only because I've only just discovered it (aged 37) and it looks to be working for me (together with a 3 x a week exfoliate with Scholl's rough skin remover). I've used various moisturisers over the years, but they've just seemed to sit on my skin and not do much but make me feel slimey.

Hi Flo, Thanks for the advice. I'll look into the Coconut Oil. I have very sensitive skin..... red hair and freckles, so I am very aprehensive to exfoliate her skin yet. Is it do-able for a child?

As far as the milk products, she used to get sick (Vomit), then it was just disentary (sorry, SP?) and gradually she would have one here and there and now she loves reg. yogurt..... but I've seen her "BUMPS" spreading....so I am going to eliminate milk products COMPLETELY. Back to Soy yogurt.

Another thing that sticks out in my mind (don't know if anyone else has heard this or not)..... my 2nd PED (We've moved a few times...) around a year old was SHOCKED that I was giving peanut butter to Alana. She said that most times, when a child has an allergy to something (As severe as she did) she would "probably" have similar allergies to Peanuts, eggs etc. I never noticed anything, but to be honest - I wasn't looking either. I hate to cut all these things out of her diet. She doesn't eat much meat (mainly chicken) and it a good sourch of Protein (She only eats the white part of the egg) But I think I might. Just to see. I also contacted Janae for samples of Arbonne products, so I'm going to try that. I just don't want to do too much at first and then not know what is was that did what. But I'm afraid that it will CONTINUE to get worse if I don't.

Good News: She doesn't pick. I've tried because I heard of the "Hair being trapped" and she won't let me near them. I have been trying to tell her that she is Beautiful and Mommy is working on getting the bumps to go away and she helps putting on the cream, so she feels important too..... we call it Beauty Parlor Time and turn it into a game.

Again, thanks so much for your input. I just found this site last week while doing alittle research on KP. This place is great!!! Full of great info and great people!

I'm Going Through The Same Thing

Hello.....My daughter is going through the exact same thing. She is not quit
3 1/2, but she was diagnosed w/ KP around 1 yrs old (heavy on the arms and thighs, a little on the face). She is also allergic to milk and has been on soy since infancy. My Ped recommended several lotions that didn't work, but assured me that it will disappear with age. I brought her to the Derm who prescribed a cream, but also gave me a sample to try first, which didn't work either (I never filled the script, just used the sample, about two weeks worth, but saw no difference and I can't remember the name). The Derm also recommended not to bath her everyday and to wash and get out of the tub, not to let her soak for a long time. I have tried a ton of products and I really have not found any that work. Her arms are much worse with the heat (We live in Louisiana), but her face and thighs seem to have gotten better as she is getting older. I am willing to try the BBW Ecup./Spearmint on her thighs, but I am not 100% sure if it is safe for children. I wrote to customer service @ BBW and I'm waiting for a reply. I will post my findings.

Bbw...

Make sure that you read the labels and that it doesn't contain mineral oil. Some of BBW's lotions do, and you don't want to use those.

I just recently discovered the Extra virgin coconut oil and it has been workign great for me. I've noticed my 19 month old has a touch of Kp also, and was thinkign of using it on him. Here is what i've been doing for myself: just exfoliating the skin in the shower (but for baby i'm sure soapign up good and using a washcloth will do just fine) and then before i get out of the shower i put on the EV Coconut oil (food grade) and rub it into my arms and thighs and let it sit for a little bit before washing it off (gently rub with water). You dont want to wash it all off... so water will still bead up on skin. Then pat dry with towel. in a couple of days, i saw results... give it a try. It's all natural stuff, so no harsh chemicals for baby's skin. Let me know how it goes and i'll tyr to post how my son does as well. Good luck.

PS... my son also has allergies, peanuts being one. So when i did ask my pediatrician about his skin, he said it was a common thing among children with allergies too.

I used the Arbonne ABC on my daughter (3 1/2 yrs old, too!) and her bumps cleared up completely! I know how self esteem suffers from KP, and at this young age, "Nana" shouldn't be talking about it to (or in front of) your child! How awful! I feel your pain though, my mother-in-law has a real knack for tactless undermining. Since you've already talked to Janae about the samples, take before and after pics so you can compare!. Also, be sure to use the products EXCLUSIVELY. No mixing and matching! Give the ABC line a fair try and you should see a difference.
About the Urea cream, I used the Carmol (40% urea) lotion for 6 months and it did nothing but sting, itch, and stink. I gave it a fair try...<SIGH>

Smile Cutie w/KP

Hi! I am very relieved to have discovered this website. Thank you to everyone who is posting comments. Kp is a really frustrating condition. Recently, my 13 mo son has been diagnosed w/ KP. I didn't worry because the doctor said it wasn't from food and it might go away. However, it has gotten worse. I dont give him milk and he eats very healthy.
My family keeps noticing and telling me to take him to the doctor, but i refuse. I am not a big fan of "meds". I much rather go to the health food store and try something natural. I have used the Arbonne ABC line wash and lotion, but did not see any results. I started using Eucerin lotion and Burts Bee's milk bath and still, no results.

I did discover KP Duty at Sephora.com and wondered if anybody has tried it? It's expensive ($30), but maybe it works. I am definetly going to try EVOC and let you know what we think. Thanks for all the comments and Good Luck!!

There is a post in the general discussion forum all about KP Duty. Some people like it, some don't. That seems to be the running theme with every product for KP. It seems to be a trial and error process which differs for each individual. I agree that you should try natural remedies if you can. Have you tried the coconut oil? Lots of people seem to have great success with it. And contrary to what your doctor told you, unfortunately most KP doesn't go away on its own with time (I haven't read one post where it cleared up on its own). But who knows? Maybe your son will be one of the lucky few!
