my 1 year old has kp

HI,

I'm new to this site - and am so happy to have found it. I'm very concerned for my one year old daughter who has very bad kp on her cheeks since she was 6months. The doctor gave me acne-mycin - which I felt was too hard on her stomach - so I stopped. I still put on the lacti-care - but I'm concerned about the long term use of that as well. I put on the Eucerin as well as vaseline. But nothing seems to work and the condition only gets worse. Because she's so young - I'm concerned with perscriptive creams. Has anyone out there had any luck with more natural solutions? Or is my concern for perscriptive medicines too much? Any suggestions would be great.

Hi,
I think your concern is normal, especially with a prescription all the time and her being so young and for her stomach.
I am not sure what Lacticare is, a cream, but is it prescription or over the counter?
You may want to try something like sweet almond oil (health food stores, walmart has this in small quantity in the phcy section). Its very gentle, and a little goes a long way. There are other oils, heck, even olive oil, I know that sounds nuts but these are very good oils for skin care and used in cosmetics, soaps, lotions, bath bombs, body scrubs, etc. My daughters kp has improved a lot and this is one of the oils she uses. She is a teen. It may be worth trying out. I wish you the best,
Molsmom

thank you

Hi,

Thank you for the suggestion of sweet almond oil - I just picked some up today. Lacticare is a perscription - basically it is a hydrocortisone cream (2%). I'm afraid it will thin out her skin over time. I also read that white tea can help. You can drink it or put the tea bags on the skin. Basically I'm trying everything to find out what works best for my daughter. And I'd like to stay away from perscriptive creams since she is so young. How many times a day should I apply the oil? And do you find this condition ever goes away - or just subsides? Thank you for responding to my last email - and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Alice

We do our "kp skincare" after bath before bedtime. I have kp also, but its always been pretty light, except pregnancy and afterwards for a bit, which I think was hormone related. I have had kp since I was a teen. My daughters kp was first noticed when she was in preschool. Hers came and go, and her pediatrician thought this was a hormone related skin problem. There were a few times we used cortisone cream, it cleared up, her skin was fine until the next time. It wasn't until a few years ago that a dermatologist diagnosed kp, and that was when the few spots on her arms had turned into spots on arms down to wrists, face (sides, eyebrows), and tops of her legs. This is also when I found out what my few spots were. Since this point, which we have no clue why it exploded like it did-but it does make me wonder if it was hormones-teen years you know, we did the dermatologist creams (otc, prescription) and that helped a bit, but overall I was very disappointed in him, the meds, the whole thing. Our bit with the oils has done better than the stuff she was on, excluding the epilpt (I recommend that), for over a year. She does use differin gel on her eyebrows, and that helps a lot, and we see a regular doctor now once a year for followup. Anyway, long story here so I best stop. I will also add, I make our own soap, and have since 1999. I think that also helps keep the moisture in skin much better than store soaps like Lava, etc. I do cold process and on occasion, melt and pour. This may also be something for you to buy yourself (ebay has many sellers, craft shows, boutiques sometimes carry homemade), or to even start doing at home and see if this makes a difference too. Oh, and a little goes a long way with these oils. You don't need to slick it up, just rub it in little bits all over.
