No Sunscreen?
The NP at our derms office told me not to use sunscreen on my 12 month old. I told her that it seemed to irritate the KP on her face (made it more red), but if you've ever tried to keep a hat on a toddler, you know it's a losing battle. My daughter has red hair, is very fair, and melanoma runs in our family, so there is no way I can not use sunscreen. And, I'm not going to confine her to the house for the rest of her life. Has anyone else been told not to use sunscreen??

Did she tell you why you shouldn't use it? Maybe she meant don't use a chemical sunscreen. There are natural sunscreens available with no chemicals in them they work by reflecting rather than absorbing the sun's rays. www.lizearle.com sell these in the sunshade range.
By the way her products are great for sensitive skins as she doesn't use nasty ingredients and they are safe for children. Last edited by fifi; 08-16-2005 at 07:27 PM. |

I agree, maybe use a physical sunscreen (Zinc Oxide, Titanium dioxide), not cosmetically elegant, but might be safer and less irritating.

I use sunscreen with Zinc Oxide in it, but I'm sure it still has chemical in it (Copportone Spectra 3). It definitely makes her KP worse when I use it - very red and bumpy. I'll try your suggestions - thanks! Are the sunscreens you are referring to the ones that are commonly used in Europe, but not FDA approved in the US (for no apparent reason)?

I'm definitely going to look into buying these products. There has been an outcry in the US because the FDA has not approved the sunscreens that have been used in Europe for years. From what I understand, the sunscreens in the US block the rays that are cancer causing, but not the rays that go deeper into the skin, and cause wrinkles. A lot of people from the US cross the border into Canada and buy it there. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with these sunscreens, because they've been used for so long. It's probably not approved in the US because of some political agenda.
