New mom with questions
My 3 year old daughter has keratosis pilaris on her arms and thighs and it goes
from being red and looking inflammed to just being bumpy skin. My doctor has told me to do only the following: Apply aquafor to her skin immediately after bathing, use dove or white bar soap for hypoallergenic skin, detergent free of perfumes and dyes and fabric softner free of perfumes and dyes. It is doing nothing to smooth out her skin. Can some provide me with some helpful hints. |

Hi. You should read up on the mom's group site for some suggestions since a lot of us moms are going through this. Since your doctor advised of natural stuff I am assuming her case it not too bad. Just to let you know anything you try more than likely it may make keep it under control but you are not going to get rid of it. With that being said, there are lots of stuff you can try and you can try various stuff to see what works for you.
First, with the wash for your toddler, you could also try something like Cetaphil Gentle cleanser (it is a soap free wash) or something similar. As for after bath, some moms including myself have had some success with oils such as sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, etc as a moisturizer. In addition to that as an after bath moisturizer I also moisturize with Eucerin Original Creme. Basically I lotion my son up twice a day and see that his skin is a lot less dry. Others you could try include Aveeno and Cetaphil Cream. Next, if you feel that simply moisturizing is not helping the bumps go down then you could take the next step and use exfoliating lotions also. The key is that a little bit goes a long way and be patient to see if a certain lotion works for your child since something that works on one person will not work on another. With that being said, since your child appears to have a "minor" case (compared to my child) this hopefully will give you success. I would put the exfoliating lotion on twice a day after your moisturizer. Here are some stuff I have used and liked so you could start with any one of these. These are all mild and do not need prescriptions. Remember that it does take time but you should see some improvement and if it doesn't take you could try a different kind. The nice thing is that they are easily accessible and not too expensive. 1)Eucerin Plus Creme or Lotion 2)Neutrogena Bump Minimizing Lotion 3)Lacticare 4)Epilyt The first two can be found anywhere. The 3rd one the pharmacy has to order and the last one can be a little harder to find. I wish you luck and please ask if you have any questions. |
