Infant son recently diagnosed
I'm the mother of a 15 mo. old who has recently been diagnosed with kp. It appears on his upper arms and cheeks. It began appearing at 5 mo. I am concerned about scarring. Is scarring inevitable? Is there something I can do to prevent scarring? My pediatrician hasn't really been helpful. Should we see a dematologist? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm so thankful to have found your site! |

Hi..my 18 month old has KP. As far as I know, the scarring is mostly caused by picking at the bumps and trying to remove the plugged follicles. Don't pick. My son saw a dermatologist who recommended LacHydrin. I've yet to see much improvement. Keep your child's skin well moisturized and use a terrycloth washcloth to help exfoliate. A 15 month old's skin is probably too sensitive for the types of exfoliators that many people on this site use. Good luck. |

Hello, KP are actually a form of allergic inflammation reaction where oil gland (sebum) get trapped and become hard just beneath skin surface, in some cases hair folicles stimulate the oil glands, I feel you should see an allergist for your son and do not worry about the scars because the skin will shed and expose new fresh skin in about 60 days, try stop giving your son milk and in place give soy milk. |

Thank you so much for the information about not picking! I wasn't sure if I should try to unplug the follicles....now I'll make sure that I don't. My pediatrician has also prescribed the same lotion. In reading through some of the postings, some people have mentioned diet. Have you tried to alter your son's diet? Again, thanks and good luck to you too. |
