Advice pls for rubra faceii
I am so happy to have found this message board. My 13 daughter has had kp since 5 weeks of age, starting on cheeks and spreading to entire body except extremities. Her legs have cleared up somewhat with age,but there has been no real improvement elsewhere. She has very distinct rubra faceii flush to her face, even when the bumps are not too bad. This will settle down and then flair up like someone has switched on a red light under her skin. I suspect it might have a tension element, also never been convinced that there is not a food allergy component. Been the dermatologist route and left that behind when the last 'specialist' wanted to put her on anti-biotic for six months. Didn't know about pernox or carmol/20 but will try. Anyone had any luck in controlling the facial flush? Any advice greatly appreciated. |

Hello Barbara, There is a cause behind KP and food allergies, I cut out foods like wheat/flour, dairy, and cut back on all meats, allergies cause fluid (water) and sebum(oil) inflammation applying chemical/ lotions is like a bandaid and is not the CAUSE, one theory is that kidneys/liver is overloaded and cause too much uric acid by too much foods and sugar fluid retention also called EDEMA, when acne(sebum) is trapped causes inflammed glands. try avoiding these foods for 30 days |

Barbara, We are experiencing difficulties with a retarded fool who finds it amusing to offer completely useless suggestions on improving KP. Read the above warning from Melissa, and check his ID no. DO NOT take their advice. |

Hi Barbara, I know what you and your daughter are going through..My son is 14 years old and also has the red cheeks(and red ears)...We have been to 3 different dermatologists, and have had all different diagnosis....the first one said maybe rosacea and ordered metrogel....no change in the cheeks after a month....we went back to see him ..then he ordered retinA..all that did was make his face redder and more sensitive, after a month and no imporovement we stopped using that.......Then when we went back to the Dr. for the third time he brought out the big medical book of skin disorders and announced(right infront of my son)that he thinks he has ulerythema oophyrogynes!!!!!!!!! I had never heard of that one and almost fell off my chair..He then proceeded to show me where he thouight my son was losing his eyebrow hairs!!! He told me that there was no cure, but that we should go to Boston to the childrens hospital (3 hours from my house) for an evaluation for laser surgery!!!!! I decided it was time for a second opinion...The second Dr. took one look at him and announced "thats not ulerythema oophorygynes..I think he has dry skin.maybe a little eczema"...We tried to tell the 2nd Dr. that my sons skin was dry because of the REtinA but he was convinced that a little steroid cream was all he needed!!!!!!! We left that office feeeling even more agitated.... He used the hydrocotrtisone cream for a few weeks, but I was nervous to have him use that kind of cream on his face, its not a great idea for long term.....So a few weeks later we made a 3rd appointment, at a Dr's office who specializes in laser surgery( not the type of laser that the 1st Dr. recommended)...We drove an hour to his office, he took one look at my son and announced" I see a lot of teenagers with skin like this...he doesnt have ulerythema oophorogynes, he just has red skin..it will get better after adolescents!!!! But he did order a tablet called nicomide..its a vitamin B compound, with zinc Oxide and folic acid(prescription only, used to treat the reddness from acne)...and he also wanted my son to start using a serum called Primacy 20...its a Vitamin C compund, comes in a small brown bottle and you rub a small amout on the reddness at night...The bottle cost $90..but at this point, it sounded like the best thing to do..My son did use the serum on his face at night, and took the pill once a day...We went back to the Dr. a few weeks later and he told us to increase the dose of the nicomide to one pill 2 times a day...I thought that my sons face looked better, but it was also summer time, and it generally looks better then anyway....Well thats the end of my story. after the last 2 Dr's told my son that his skin was OK he decided that the reddness diddnt bother him anymore...He went away to sleeep away camp for one week and didnt want to take the pills and serum with him..and that is when he stopped using everything..I feel that his skin is as red as it usually is at this time of year, but it no longer bothers him, so I have stopped "searching" for a cure...however, I do read all these posts, and I am not convinced that he doesnt have rubra faceii.....he doesnt have bumps, just the reddness....I hope that your daughter will feel better knowing that she isnt alone with this...Where do you live??? I am in NY...Take care!!! ..By the way there is a web site for the Vitamin C elixer, i will find it and post it... Robin |

Have you thought about rosacea as being the cause for the redness. You know there are diff types of KP mine is not red, it's just bumpy. The creme I use for mine is actually a drug designed for plaque psoriases and it works for me and I have KP on my upper arms, some on my forearms, my upper thighs, hips, buttocks, some on my shins up by my knees, the back of my calves, and on my face.....anyways look into a rosacea treatment, stay away from antibiotics. |

well generally this condition is caused by buildup of keratin on the cheeks and it irratates the capillaries beneath the cheeks so anytime u see the redness its just the inflamed capillaries ....the only way to reduce the redness is well permantly would be with laser photoderm, longpulsed dye, shortpulsed dye etc. then the other route to just subdue the symptons would be some kind of topical or cream like epidel or some kind of lactic acid cream ..i hope this helps |
