Scrubbing

I went to a dermatologist and he told me that scrubbing is not good for KP. He's point was that when you scrub a little too much you can irritate the KP causing it to get worse. He just told me to use a buff puff, which is a lot softer, and not a stiff brush.

I was told by an esthetician several years ago to use nylon gloves and rub gently. I use either the gloves or a nylon pouf or back scrubber. I also know from experience that severe scrubbing makes it worse. I once got so sick of my arms that I used one of those foot pumice blocks to scrub. My skin was very smooth for awile but by the next day my arms were extremely red and bumpy - much worse than ever before!

I can honestly say with 100 percent confidence that over scrubbing makes them more. I noticed that my left arm was way worse then my right (b/c I am right handed and can reach the left). Well last night I got this bright idea to try to scrub them all out if not just open them up so the meds can get to them better. Wrong!!!! Now on my left arm (b/c I concentrated on it more b/c it had bumps) I have whelps now. Small kp bumps have not turned into very large red bumps. Just don't do it. I just wonder how long until it get back to normal.

Roxi,

I had to grin reading your post. Not that i think it's funny you got so frustrated that you went at your bumps with a vengence, just that i sympathize and have been there too. Two days ago i decided to go at a recently rough patch behind my ears with a pumice stone and now have scabs all over my neck! Well, I guess i won't try that again, and am glad i tried a spot that isn't very noticeable! I know that some on this board report being able to use a stiff brush, while others find it much too abrasive. We all have to realize that our skin is different. Some treatments work for some, others work for others. If scrubbing your skin raises welts, try a less abrasive method (either less abrasive applicator, or less abrasive substance). I find good results with the nylon shower glove. I also find good results with the St. Ives Apricot scrub with or without salicylic acid. Good luck!

Live and learn. I am finding that using a tough sponge makes them worse for me. I will take your advice in the near future.

Roxi,

Try Aveeno lotion for the itching. It helps me. My daughter says the nylon sponge makes her itch when she gets out of the shower so i gave her a small bottle of Aveeno to use and she says it's solved her problem. I figure to try some other kind of abrasion on those bumps once they heal!
