MSM ...something to think about

I recently read all the posts about MSM and what it's doing for people, so i purchased a 19.7% MSM creme, and i am testing it on 1 knee and comparing it to the untreated knee. I just started so nothing to report yet.

I got a pamphlet along with the MSM product, and from what it tells me that it does, is not the desired effect a person with KP wants. I is supposed to increase keratin production i.e. makes nails stronger, hair grow faster and skin grow at an increased rate.
I just came from seeing my doctor today where we discussed my KP. He knows what it is, and explained to me that what is needed is something to slow down the production of keratin in the skin, which makes sense to me. If MSM causes increased keratin production, then whatever plugs you are able to scrub off in the bath/shower, will grow back that much faster as a result of the MSM increasing the production of keratin.

I hope this is not the case, but it seems logical.

you are right, KP occurs as a result of our bodies producing keratin too quickly. dead skin bunches up in our hair follicles causing all those lovely little bumps. MSM (sulfur) is needed for the production of keratin. what we need is something that REGULATES our bodies' production of keratin to a normal level. the question is, is that what MSM does? or does it just help our bodies produce more - something we obviously don't need. because so many people have had so much success with sulfur soap and MSM, i'm thinking maybe it must do something to regulate it. i'm going to try and do some more research on it. in the meantime, i have included a link to a site that explains the keratin thing better than i can. here it is (i hope):

It seems to make sense to me about the over production of keratin.

The pamphlet i recieved with my MSM creme states that, in pill form, the extra sulfer in the body due to the MSM pill, will "increase" the production of keratin in the body, producing faster hair growth, faster and stronger finger and toenail growth, and faster skin growth.

I'm trying the MSM anyways just to see.

hi, i did some more research on this the other day. it was bugging me. anyway, i think we're on the right track with sulfur. since we produce too much keratin too quickly, we need to use products that will help soften our keratin in order to loosen the plugs and dissolve them. anything that achieves this result is said to be a "keratolytic agent". salicylic acid is a great keratolytic, which is why it is so helpful to people with KP as well as those with pimples and blackheads. in doing my research, i found out that sulfur is also a good keratolytic agent. this is why people have been having so much success with it i assume. also, it would explain why the sulfur soap with 3% salicylic acid everyone is using is so effective. it is a double whammy! i also found out that urea has keratolytic properties as well. so i bathe with my sulfur soap, then i put on my Dermal Therapy with 25% urea and after that i apply my MSM cream - all the while taking my MSM pills. forward ho!!

I was worried when I read a post about the MSM producing more keritan(not sure who posted it).Anyway I got the MSM yesterday and have not used it yet. I think the MSM will help even so it helps produce more keritan, I think the problem is our skin. Our skin is not shedding properly for the hair to grow out and it becomes stuck and we get stuck w/ KP.So maybe the MSM will help our skin in the shedding process since it's supposed to make the skin healthier. I'm tring to be positive. I'm gonna try the MSM today and I'm going to make lotion. Will keep my progress posted. Kim

Hi! What is Dermal Therapy and where did you et it? I gather it's a lotion, right? I took the MSM in my drink today and added it to my lotion w/ the recipe given by another poster. My bumps are so gone and the red dots are really light, I just need that extra push to get clear skin. I may try Mederma cream. OK Thanks. Kim

hi! dermal therapy is a skin care company basd out of London, Ontario in Canada. they specialize in skin therapy products that contain urea. i live in Canada so a few of the products are readily available at our biggest pharmacy chain, Shoppers Drug Mart. i would assume they are available in the U.S., (if that's where you live!)but i'm not sure. anyway, the one i use is Dermal Therapy Heel Care with 25% urea. it's a fairly small jar but it lasts me for months and months because i apply it when my skin is still wet and a little goes a very long way. after seeing your question, i went to get my jar and found that they have a website. i didn't even know! they have tons more products than i originally thought - even one with 30% urea. and also, they have larger quantities of the ones they sell in the stores. here is the link, you can browse for yourself!

For one, it has really wiped out my KP, and, from what I understand, it helps your cells to function more nomally, including skin cells. So they may produce more keratin, but at the same time, they are better able to deal with it. Our bodies are marvelous creations, KP or no...
