Psoriasis in the scalp
Does anyone have my problem? I have what has been diagnosed as psoriasis of the scalp. It is basically hidden by my hair, but it is getting worse by the day. The itching is awful and causes unbelievable dandruff. I have tried many creams prescribed by drs., but none have helped. I am waiting for my prescription of Diprolene lotion to try that. Can anyone relate to my problem? Thanks for any input Phyne |

Although you have to apply this regularly and it is quite messy, this ointment has worked very well for me: Desonide Ointment, 0.05% What I do is apply it at night and shampoo my hair in the morning. It really works. All you need to do is apply it 3 times a week. |

I can certainly relate to your problem as I have it too. Actually I have treated mine pretty successfully--not cured, but controlled. It was part of a huge lifestyle change so I'm not too sure what had the greatest effect. As part of an effort to get my blood sugar and cholesterol under control, under the advice of a holistic nutritionist I shifted my diet from a typical American one to a primary reliance on seafood for protein and fats, as well as whole grains and nuts. (This doesn't mean deep-fat-fry the seafood, nor does it mean salted, oil-roasted nuts--look for the walnuts/pecans in the baking aisle.) These particular oils help to decrease the inflammatory reaction in psoriasis (and elsewhere in your body) and had a very large effect. The fats that are in red meat and dairy fuel an over-active inflammatory response. By taking the painful step of cutting cheese and dairy out of my diet I controlled perhaps 60% of the area coverage (and I can always tell when I slip). I also started taking vitamins with a long list of ingredients, designed for people with a history of blood sugar/cholesterol problems (which in many cases are linked to inflammation problems). There's hair conditioner that I discovered, by accident, to also help. Pro-vitamin E Instant Repair hair serum. I end up using 2-3 times the recommended amount, because I'm basically oiling the scalp with it, rather than combing it through my hair. That controls another 30% or so, so that nowadays I get only occasional outbreaks. I sure hope this helps, because I know what it's like when your scalp itches so badly that you can't work, and what a mess it is, too. Jessie |
