Question for Rachael

In your reply to genetic garbage, you mentioned that KP affects up to 50% of the world's population and that some areas in the world have more of it than other areas . As I'm not aware that any global survey on KP has been carried out, I'd be interested in finding out which parts of the world have a greater KP prevalence and why. The only survey I've read in the medical literature that has been carried out is a survey on 900 people in the UK, which certainly does not represent a world population.

I have read that certain ethnic groups such as Irish or Celtic seem to have a higher incidence. I don't know if this info is just from anecdotal evidence. As far as areas, it probably has more to do with climate as dry climates tend to make KP worse than humid climates, but it is genetic and can strike any group anywhere.

I think maybe this a percentage we are told by our Doctors, I know that is what my Doctor told me. So I guess thay are going be the amount of people they see w/ KP. To be honest I have been told about the 50% by more then one Doctor and I know I have read it in many places.

Almost every single website that I have been to has mentioned that KP affects 1/2 the world's population... even www.keratosispilaris.org!!!
QUOTE:
"KP is estimated to affect roughly half of the world's over-all population. The inheritance pattern of the condition is dominant. This means that only one copy of the KP gene is required to result in a person developing this condition. The practical implications of this are that if one parent has KP, the chance of the couple's child having KP is over 50%. If both parents have the condition, the odds are even higher."
I know it doesn't mention any surveys done, etc, to make that statement seem more believable, but every website seems to say it.
Also- have a look at what some other people's replied to your message (explaining how some areas of the world have more KP than other areas).

I hope this helps you!

I just thought I'd add that knowing that KP affects up to 50% of the population is becoming more believable by the second!! At school today (while waiting for my year 12 report), I noticed that an extra two of my friends have it, plus the librarian!!! Many people hide it, except I tend to notice it, since I have become very aware of people's skin lately....
