Teen with VERY red face
Originally posted by KP mom in Oklahoma
My son is almost 14 and has been diagnosed with KP. The doctor did not explain that it is difficult to get rid of. Made it sound like it wasn't any big deal and the Lac-hydrin would cure everything. After reading through this site, I am extremely disourage. He has only used the lotion for one day at this point, but want to stay ahead of the game so to speak. His upper arms, chest and back have small white bumps, but his cheeks are severely flushed all the time. I think the lotion may have made it redder. If anyone out there is reading this, what would be our next course of action? It breaks my heart to see him go through this. He has had this condition since he was about 6, I just didn't pay much attention to it, thought he was just an active boy and got flushed easily. I finally realized the redness never went away. He never goes anywhere, and I think the other kids in his middle school have started teasing him, cause he won't leave the house now. I am having to make him back off on the lachydrin, as he is applying it every hour hoping it will cure him. I really doubt he should use it that much. Any ideas? I will try anything at this point! He is a terrific kid. Also, is there any type of kids forum he can go to, and not hear all this depressing adult stuff? I don't want him to see himself this way 20 years from now. I want him to have HOPE! |

hi..my son is 14 and was diagnosed by one dermatologist with ulerythema oophorogynes(when KP affects the face and eyebrows..he told us)...he told us that the only tratment was to go to Boston and have an evaluation for laser Surgery!!!!!! ..I felt that a second opinion was needed...we went to a second and a third dermatologist..who both disagreed with the first dermatologist....anyway make a long story short, none of the creams did any good, the redness did not improve, but after the summer my son decided himself that he wasnt going to let red cheeks bother him anymore!!!! He says the more he gets upset about it the worse it gets....tell your son not to let it affect everyrthing he does....think positive!!!!One dermatologist that we went to (who works at a laser surgery center) said it would improve after adolescents!! |

Hi, You might want to check whether the Doc intended for your son to use the Lachydrin on his face. I suspect not. Lachydrin is used to smooth the little bumps on the arms and legs but quite often with these conditions, you can have facial redness and flushing without any bumps on the face. I suspect that Lachydrin should not be used on the face since it will only tend to make the skin even drier and therefore aggravate the flushing. Unfortunately there are no creams around at the moment to treat the facial redness and flushing (don't use steroid creams) and the best current treatment appears to be the long pulsed-dye laser. Most people with KP do not have the flushed face and nobody fully understands the connection between the two conditions. It seems that some of us with KP have this problem with our facial capilaries which make them hyper-reactive to any stimulus, thus leading to permanent redness and flushing. Lasers have been quite effective for many people so they are definitely worth looking into. Good luck! Rick. |

Hi, I think that with all the good results from Sulfur Soap, it would be a good start for your son. Most find the 3% Salicylic Acid/Sulfur Soap more beneficial due to the "S.A." in it, and it's really cheap. http://sal3.com/ from: http://sulfursoap.com/ Also, check out this site on KP, it has other product information you might want to read about as well. (helpful info.) http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic1246.htm I wish you all the luck in the world...I was a teen with KP too, and I know it sucks :-( .
