Hello. I have had KP since i was about 10/11. it started off quite mild on my arms, but becoz of puberty, i gained weight and did notice that my KP was getting worse. I weigh about 12 1/2 stone (bout 180 lbs)now and im 5'7 so i am overweight, but was a stone heavier b4 joining a slimming club. my sister has KP as well and she is about 2 1/2 stone lighter than me and her KP is not as bad. maybe having larger arms gives the illusion that you have more KP becoz its on a wider area. I think if someone is overweight like me then it can stress them out and worsen their KP thru their self-loathing attitude. Hopefully i will be slim in a years time. My KP mite be better, it might not be, but at least ill be happier with my appearance (with clothes on!)I'll have 2 wait and see. But, im never gonna give up my search for a KP solution. Ill try and get hold of some sulphur soap and see how that goes. Stay hopeful everyone! love Nicole xxx |

I have lost 49 pounds in the last 14 weeks and it has not changed the kp at all. I have 2 siblings who have never been overweight and they have worse kp than I do. I think that if there is any correlation at all it would be that stress is a contributing factor to both weight gain and kp outbreaks. There is little or no data support any cause and effect relationship between the two. Perhaps, bg, you should consider that when you look at a pretty, thin person you tend to focus on their positive features and not even notice the kp. How one feels about their appearance is reflected in how they carry themselves and affects how others view them. Next time you are out, make an effort to look at the arms of the thin people you see, I assure you some of them will have kp. |

The last time this question was posed (read back several months in this forum), it provoked some incredibly nasty postings by people who strongly disagreed with each other. Several posters (and I am among them) indicated that they had experienced a strong correlation between weight and KP (also between pregnancy and KP). This is what is true FOR ME (I am not speaking universally): I was never overweight as a child or in my twenties. I did not develop KP until I was well into my thirties and had become obese. After losing 70 pounds, my KP disappeared. However, I began to regain weight after back surgery and--voila!--my KP reappeared. I have very fair, sensitive skin (Scottish background) and certainly fit the skin profile of a KP sufferer, but have only had bouts of KP during times of my life when I was overweight. |

Maybe you were stressed over your weight gain, etc... and that caused your KP. There seems to be several people with different theories into the cause of KP. It's possible that there is more than just the hereditary factor. It looks that way from all the posts...WHO KNOWS, all I know is that I've never been obese and I have KP really bad. FYI |

>>Maybe you were stressed over your weight gain, etc... and that caused your KP.<< You may be completely correct. But if you can accept an emotional cause for KP, why not obesity? My experience has been that the dermatological community doesn't think KP is a very serious condition, and therefore not worthy of much research. They keep telling us that KP is hereditary--and no doubt it is--but people on this board report numerous factors that trigger its appearance. Some people have it from birth, some not until after puberty, some only during pregnancy, some worse (and some better) during menses, some worse when overweight, and on and on. There may be MULTIPLE triggers for KP--think of the number of ways people can develop heart disease or cancer. A morbidly obese friend of mine developed ovarian cancer because the size and number of her fat cells caused the estrogen in her body to be metabolized differently. If fat can cause cancer, why not KP? Yes, I know it's a stretch, but I've read enough on this board to at least be open to the idea that there may be multiple factors that trigger KP. For me, that factor appears to be obesity. |

Well for me I was always concerned that my arms were large and combined with KP they were not a pretty site. I'm not fat, but my arms were bit flabby compared to the rest of my body in my opinion. I did stress lots about it, but now i seem to be losing the weight on my arms and the KP is less noticable. I long for the day when I can wear a tshirt or singlet in public! |

But after I weened the weight of my breast decreased and the affected area went away. The same is true I feel about the thigh area..Skin needs to breath. |
