Brynn's mom's recipe--Sal Acid and Keralyt

I've notice a couple of posts indicating that prolonged use of Keralyt will thin skin. This is incorrect. Keralyt is 6% salicylic acid, NOT a steroid. In fact, you can use Keralyt in the "Brynn's mom" formulation--forget about trying to find the salicylic acid powder. Mix the Carmol 20 directly on the skin with Keralyt, using equal parts of each product. That will yield the 3% salicylic acid ingredient that Brynn's mom's recipe calls for. |

I was putting keralyt gel and carmol 20 on. I emailed dermadoctor, and she pointed out that keralty gel was made for corns and callouses. so it is designed to break down skin. Ok, where there are no bumps on your skin, wouldn't it thin it out or break it down? Ya, it may help the bumps as long as you use it everyday but you can't use a qtip or whatever to put it directly onto each bump. So maybe your statement that keralyt gel does NOT thin skin should be looked into before you state something about a product you may or may not know about. I am not saying I am an expert, but if a product is made for one specific action, it will do that action regardless where you put it. |

Keralyt is designed to "break down" skin in the same way that almost everything else prescribed for keratosis pilaris is. It's a beta-hydroxy acid that accelerates the exfoliation of the skin. Lac-Hydrin, Lacticare and Amlactin are alpha-hydroxy acids also designed to accelerate skin exfoliation. It's not permanently "thinning" the dermis, it's just getting dead skin cells to slough off more quickly. After all, if you "thin" the skin over a callous, you're just getting the extra dead layers of skin off. On the other hand, high-potency steroid creams DO have the potential to permanently thin healthy skin, and also cause stretch marks. In my opinion, Keralyt can be used safely, but steroid creams must be used with care. If you doubt that Keralyt (and salycylic acid in general) can be used safely, you must question why Brynn's mom's doctor prescribed it for a child. |

They didn't prescribe keralyt. They prescribed salicylic acid powder....... Other people decided to use keralyt instead of the powder because they could not get a pharmacist to mix it, or couldn't measure it properly etc...... |

I forgot to also mention, that in the recipe given to brynn's mom, the sal acid mixed it came to 3% sal acid. If you put straight keralyt gel on it's 6% |

You are certainly free to believe whatever you want. However, if you take a 6% salicylic acid formulation (Keralyt), and mix it half and half with Carmol 20, you will end up with 3% salicylic acid. That was the confusion with the powder--you bought it in an 18% concentration, but had to mix it down until it was just 3%. Keralyt is pure salicylic acid, just the same as what you'd get in the powder. |
