What first?
Originally posted by Donna, wes's mom
Hello all.....I have looked at quite a few posts here and to tell you honestly...I dotn know where I should start. Can some of you tell me what you think may be the most practical thing ot try first, before we start up the ladder? I would really like to start something today. Poor Wesley just cried to me last night. THere are some older kids in his PE class that just really give him a hard time everyday. I called the counselor at school to have him bring Wesley in and see if maybe he can switch his schedule. So, if anyone hads any ideas of where to start first, let me know please. I am really starting to worry about him and this is a kid that has never had problems or allowed anyone to effect him. Thanks and hugs to all Donna |

Donna, I wish your son didn't have to go through this! My 12 year old girl has Tourette's Syndrome and endured teasing. It was tough, but she is stronger for it. Luckily she is one of the few who seem to outgrow it in preteens. Poor kid also has kp, but it is mild and has not yet been noticed by the kids. I feel for you and Wes. On your question - my doctor tells me that it is unlikely that any course of treatment would have more than a 50% success rate on kp in general. Basically, it is trial and error. That said, I would suggest starting at the low end of the cost scale and working up. The treatment I just started, that seems to be working so far, is sulfur soap (scrub with loofah), followed by Dermarest (for Psoriasis 3% salicylic acid) and Carmol 20 (20% urea). I spent $12.00 at CVS Pharmacy for 2 bars of soap and the Dermarest. The Carmol 20 was under $12.00 including shipping from dermadoc.com. Considering the cream my doc was going to prescribe is over $80 for a small tube, I'd say $24 is a bargain. Even though everyone seems to have different success stories, you will notice that the same or similar active ingredients seem to repeat (sulfur, SA, urea, etc). Go on dermadoc.com and search by condition - kp is listed and clicking on it will link you to all the products available. Once you choose a course of treatment, be patient a give it time to work. Good Luck from one mom to another. Let me know how it goes. |
