I didn't know was kp was until my son had it on his cheeks, fore arms and thighs. I realized that I had a mild form of it all along and didn't know it wasn't normal! Anyway, are there any of these skin products any of you feel are safe to use on kids? My son is 2 and his kp is pretty significant--his cheeks are so red sometimes! I welcome all suggestions!

I just posted a note about my son, around the same age too! LOL... Anyway, our ped recommended the lac-hydrin lotion, maybe b/c my ds has a really bad case. We mostly use the J&J bath wash. I believe all of their bath washes are sop free and hypoallergenic... My son is very fair skinned, with flaming red curly hair! The lac hydrin definitely irritates his skin, but by morning noone would notice. We seriously thought about just leaving it alone, with him being so young. But we feared that if we didn't keep on top of it, he would be covered in it!! As it is, with treatment, it's pretty bad.

A concerned mom, there are several options that you might want to consider in treating your 2 yr old. You could leave him be (he is too little to care too much anyway, unless he experiences discomfort (dryness, itching), you could try using a non-medical approach (no harsh chemicals) and just keep him moisturized and help him exfoliate (gently) every few days… or you could try a medical approach (with Rx products) -- a doctor might prescribe protopic, but sometimes this method of treatment is unnecessary. Before you try this, you should see if you can control his kp naturally in order to give his immune system the best shot at working naturally at his kp. Try bathing him with a moisturizing wash instead of soap (even though Johnson & Johnson has a great soap with lotion—its pink) and use a soft cotton washcloth and lightly rub the affected areas. After you dry him off, try and put some more lotion on, and again before he goes to sleep (there is a bedtime bath lotion that smells great and will make his skin very soft—also by J&J) If he has really dry skin, you might want to think about putting a humidifier in his room (especially now that winter is coming up). Sometimes, measures like these will significantly help younger children without having to get into the tedious and expensive adventure of otc and Rx products. Lots of Love, Mel

Hi Mel, First off, this is a great site. Thanks for starting it. It has made me feel better about myself having other people to relate to . I am 33, live in Florida and I have NEVER seen anyone with kp my whole life. My 9 month old son is starting to get kp. My doctor told me to leave it alone. I have been taking his advise only because his skin is so fair and sensitive. I use Aveeno soap on him when I give him a bath but I have never heard or thought of using a humidifier. I think I will start trying that tonight. Do you know which J&J lotion it is that will help him? There are so many. I have a Lavender J&J lotion but I have been afraid to use it. I do not want to make his KP worse. It smells Really good so I wonder if that is what you are refering to. Thanks Cris.

Baby Washes can be harsh too, I guess it all depends on the person. My daughter started showing signs of KP, she is now 19 mos. and the docter said to use Dove soap because it has all of the moisturizers in it.

have you tried using aveenos baby wash? it is realy mild. i would not try j and j lavendar...my son has normal (so far thank God) skin and it affects him. We either use the plain baby wash by j and j or aveeno. also, for dry skin, burts bees baby lotion is GREAT. Use that and a little aloe (mix it together- did you know aloe absorbs into the skin 3 times faster than water?) and it is very gentle and keeps their skin soft (yours too!).

Thanks Cris! I love working with this site (I’m becoming a pc junkie… I think I am going to ask Santa for a laptop so I don’t have to fight for ‘puter time with my son who has just discovered messenger!) Aveeno is a great product (kim r recommends it too)… it smells pretty good (thinks me!) and some have a very slight percent of sal.acid (but its still gentle enough to use on your son). My sister uses one from J&J… I am pretty sure she used the lavender (purple capped) one, but, there is also a milder one for sensitive skin (it has a blue cap). J&J also sells these head to tow gentle cleansing cloths that are a great alternative for gently exfoliating your baby’s skin. If he has really sensitive skin, there are other products from Burts Bee’s and Arbonne as well. My children are way past that stage so I don’t have much hand’s on experience with these products. However, when my son was a baby, I used to use Vaseline Creamy on his skin during the winter because he would develop these dry patches from the low humidity… plus I bought him a humidifier for his room (its portable so you can take it anywhere in your house) and this really helped both the dry skin and the mild kp. I am going to talk to my children’s pediatrician when I get a chance and see what tips he has for babies with kp so that I can add that to the revision of the helpful hints page that I am working on. I hope that I have been of some help : ) Mel

What does the j&j lotion do to your son? My nephew has pretty sensitive skin (he gets the nastiest heat rashes sometimes) and the lavender lotion hasn’t affected him (as far as I can tell.)

Mel--thanks for all the helpful hints! I took him to a dermatologist and he prescribed Amlactin and lachydrin--with no results so far. I know the lac-hydrin stings sometimes because he says "OW!" when I put it on his cheeks. I will try some of these other products and get a humidifier! Also, this site is so wonderful! You would think as common as this condition is, more doctors would be aware of it and give more treatment options. Our family doctor had never heard of kp! But i think the best advice is from other people who are living it. Thanks for the help!
