INFO: Salicylic Acid From Medichest.com, and Correct Mix Ratios

Medichest.com sells 4oz jars of Salicylic Acid, for which no prescription is required. I received mine today. It says "For manufacturing and processing" on the bottle, which is how they can sell it, as it is not being sold for use on people (it's the same stuff though).

Saves a trip to the doctor and pharmacy if you can't be bothered or don't have insurance.

You need 0.09oz (by weight, NOT volume) salicylic acid to get a 3% solution in a 3oz tube of Carmol20. This is 2.55 grams, which is impossible to measure unless you have access to an expenive chemistry lab or are friends with a drug dealer.

You can, however, measure volume at home. (For those of you following along, the density of SA is 1.4 g/cc.) So..... in volume terms, you need .37 of a teaspoon- which is a 1/4 teaspoon plus an 1/8 teaspoon.

Be aware that teaspoons typically aren't very accurate, but even so, you'd have to be really sloppy to get the finished solution more than half a percent off. Remember to mix very thoroughly as well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for confirming my math. I had figured that a teaspoon equals 5 grams. So, if I wanted 2.3 grams of a powdered substance, I would want to use slightly half of that. By the way, Scooter, did you use water to dissolve the S.A. powder?

You can't make a general statement like "a teaspoon equals xxx grams of a powdered substance" without knowing the density of the substance in question. Teaspoons measure volume, and grams measure weight. A teaspoon of lead would be far heavier than a teaspoon of magnesium. But yeah, you aren't far off in this case.

I haven't mixed it yet, but I was planning to use water.

Scooter, just a couple of questions. What's the brand name of the SA powder you got? Mine is Humco, but on the side it does say "fed law prohibits dispensing w/o a prescription". But I wasn't asked for a prescription. Also, could you explain exactly how you converted .09oz to teaspoons. My math isn't great, I need to know how to do this correctly. My calculations came out to 2.55 grams=.54 tsp. Which is alittle over 1/2 teaspoon. Of course, I didn't take into account "volume". Thought about it, but had no idea how to do it. Especially, the volume/density of SA powder (assuming those two are the same thing). Thanks, Chew

Use 1/2 oz of water (try to use distilled water) then inject it into the carmol 20 and shake shake shake.
