More on Weight (sorry i'm late)

Hi all-

I know this post may be out of context at this point, but i just wanted to throw this out there: Weight HAS been scientifically associated with KP. (I've attached some links at the bottom) It's not black and white, as if skinny people don't have it and fat people do. Diabetes also occurrs in thin people, but it's obvious that weight has a lot to do with it. In fact, diabetes in particular has been associated with more kp and other skin disorders than in people without diabetes.

That said, my own research points to being a much bigger issue than weight per se. Being overweight doesn't 'cause' the problem, what causes us to be overweight causes the problem. i think kp has to do with dietary/lifestyle/genetic factors (oooh, very original). more specifically, poor metabolism of fat and sugar are involved, side effects of a generally wretched American diet. This might be why one person complains of bad kp even when she diets (lo-[essential]fat), even though she is not overweight, or why supplementation with essential oils helps many people.

the only time in my life since puberty that my skin was totally, completely clear was after a month-long no-sugar (of any kind!), no-dairy regimen - regardless of any products i was using ON my skin. i don't always have the discipline to live that way, but i will never forget the results.

thoughts, anybody?

jmh

Interesting ideas. I am 40 and have had KP forever
with occasional bouts of clear skin. I am
overweight now, and it is worse now.... But I was
also very skinny once, and had it then too.

I am fairly careful about what I eat. (I just eat
too much.) I eat alot of vegetables and fruits.
I do have a wicked sweet tooth though.

The last time my skin was exceptionally nice looking
I was really into the all-natural stuff and
nutrition. I was taking a teaspoon of Flax Oil
every day. Plus adding Brewers yeast and Spirulina
to a nutrition shake I used to whip up. On my
skin I would layer Lac Hydrin, concentrated (4x) pure
Aloe gel (health food store only), and Coconut Oil.
In the shower I used the Dr. Bronners all natural
soap and a loofah. Sometimes the lavendar soap, sometimes the
peppermint. Now, I tell you all this but let me add
that I was also overweight. As a matter of fact,
I think the Flax Oil supplementation may have
added pounds. I also want to add that I have since
tried the external program again, without the
Brewers Yeast and Flax Oil, and it didn't work
alone. So, yes, I have particularly wondered about
the Flax Oil (essential fatty acids) and may
try it again. The extra calories worry me but
perhaps I could make a salad dressing with it and
use it that way. I may give it a try.

There are so many factors that whenever my skin
has cleared it is very difficult to know exactly
what caused it. As soon as I think I know, of course,
I try it and it doesn't work.

Of course, I'm pretty skinny these days and still have it. I overeat quite a bit though. My money's on overeating sugar/bad fats, although i haven't been very good about eating well (i.e. avoiding sugar/dairy) for quite some time. I've had some much bigger health problems than KP in the past, so as long as what i'm eating isn't making me seriously ill, i usually don't give a **** what else it may be doing. i have tried flax too, but i have the same problem as most people: it's really hard to tell if that's what's making a difference. My exboyfriend swore flax helped his eczema, but then he ran out of it once and his skin got even better, so then he thought it was the cow gelatin in the capsules that was doing it. ha! the problem with our bodies is that they're not a nice, tidy clinical trial. it takes days - even weeks - for things to work their way in and out of us, and then there's the problem of our own imagination! and, i've tried a gazillion lotions. it's all a giant ****shoot. ...i don't know how much stock you put in theories like candida, but you may want to try foregoing ALL sugar for a few days (including fruit!) and see what happens. jmh

If I could give up sugar I would be alot thinner too!
But, oh, what a sacrifice! I may get desperate enough to try it
one day to try it. I've also been advised by some to try
giving up dairy as well.

For now anyway, that much sacrifice is just too hard. I
