Just tell them to back off.
I was actually asked to resign from my job at a jewelry store because my KP acted up and I was having a hard time getting it under control again.
Now i just tell people. You'd be surprised how many people have no idea what it is. I literally say: "It's a genetic skin condition called Karatosis Pillaris. It's untreatable and very painful." That usually shuts them up.
The horrible new is that there is no cure. There are lots of things you can do to treat the symptoms, but it will won't go away until you've reached adulthood (20-25years) or so. Some people never completely get rid of it.
Understand that this is not your fault. If it flares up and won't go away just know it's genetic and if you're doing all you can. Hold your head up high, tell people what it is and assure them that it's not contageous.
Cheer up. Were all here to give you support.

I find that short sleeves are best because then you don't have the skin getting rubbed by the clothing, unfortunately this leaves you open to comments. I almost always wear short sleeves and then have an 'over shirt' that I put on. A hoody, sweater or something that I put on if I'm feeling uncomfortable or 'exposed'

I have not found a treatment that works (for me, they might work for you) but I do rub myself down generously with Vasaline Cocao Butter lotion every night and when I get out of the shower, this seems to help the itching. I also like the lotion called 'Utterly smooth' but it gets expensive when you're using a lot of it.

I'm going to try Oil pulling next, I figure it wont hurt, so might as well try it.
