Propranolol

I have a serious problem.

My dermatologist perscribed propranolol to me 2 days ago. I began taking the medication. Since, my parents have felt that it is a "very dangerous drug" and forced me to give them my pills until I make another appt.with my dermatologist for us to all discuss the medication. Is propranolol as bad as it is being characterized?

Re: Propranolol

your doctor shouldn't have given you anything without your parent's consent. shame on him. he could lose his license for that sort of thing, depending on your age.

I'm 20 years old, but my parents control my medical insurance.

I went alone to the dermatologist alone

oooooh. ok, so i get that they could probably call their insurance company and have them not cover your medication but.. but forcing you to hand them over? forcing your personal dr to have a discussion with them? that isn't ok..they're over stepping their boundaries. though if you're concerned that it is a dangerous drug you could always get a second opinion.

Propranolol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

why would he prescribe this for your skin problem? seems like it has nothing to do with it whatsoever.

Re: Propranolol

I know thats what I thought, Its NOT safe under any circumstance to force me off a medication that clearly states "Do not discontinue use without consenting your doctor first". A more logical approach would have been to make me make the appt. but maintain the medication, decreasing the risk. Is Propranolol as bad as I'm being told? My doctor told me at the worst I would suffer fatigue.

Missliss, they are telling me that these Beta-Blockers are harmful, they cite Wikipedia against me.

Re: Propranolol

It can be used to combat flushing. And has been successful so far.

Re: Propranolol

It reduces adreneline and thus allows you to maintain a "cool" when a blush might occur.

Re: Propranolol

fatigue? it seems there are a LOT worse things that could happen? you should research every drug before you take them, and get second opinions! though your parents may be acting out of haste.. it seems like they're the only ones looking out for you.

Re: Propranolol

that seems like an extreme measure.. there are other things that can be done for facial blushing..beta-blockers are a big deal and dangerous.

Re: Propranolol

I agree, I have read the side-effects and they dont seem too severe. I have personally weighed each against the positive (not blushing) and am certain I want to maintain my dosage.

Re: Propranolol

I dont think I would necessarily call them dangerous, can you tell me on what grounds they are dangerous? I am a 20 year old male, physically fit, perfect blood pressure, strong heart, you name it.

Re: Propranolol

when i said there are worse things that could happen aside from fatigue, what i meant was, beta blockers can cause worse than fatigue. seems like your dr was downplaying matters. i urge you to get a second opinion...really.
