biopsy for diagnosis

Took my son to a dermatologist today. He had prescribed a short treatment (4 weeks) of a low dose hydrocortisone. Told him if anything it made the area a little more red. He said it was worth a shot and said our only other option was pulse dye laser treatment. He said the insurance company would cover the patch test but not the treatment. When I asked what his diagnosis was? I asked if it was KPRF? He sort of laughed and said it could be, but he couldn't really say what it was without a biopsy. I had never heard of doing a biopsy from anything I've read. he didn't really push the biopsy, but used that as a reason for no diagnosis. Has anyone heard of doing a biopsy to diagnose KPRF? 2 of my children have been diagnosed with KP without a biopsy by other doctors, but not KPRF. Maybe it's different. We can't see those other doctors under my new insurance. I have scheduled an appointment with another derm to try and get him diagnosed. I mentioned the white spots that he has on both cheeks in the middle of the redness and reading that it is common with KPRF. Again, he smiles.

I had a skin biopsy performed on my cheek while at the Mayo Clinic. The dermatologist confirmed, along with the biopsy, that I indeed had Keratosis Pilaris on the face.

Re: biopsy for diagnosis

how old is your son ? they wont push the biopsy, because even with it , they still say thers nothing to do about, except moisturize with cream, after washing face. PDL can help I believe but the trick is how many treatments. ask the derm if he can put it under your insurance, let him feel your sorrow if he has a good bed side manner he should. he still gets paid through the insurance co. just not up front. if no, find someone else.
