Hi Anne:

Azelaic acid does have some features like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), but it is not classified as such.

It is mainly used for acne, because it reduces the levels of harmful skin bacteria that feed on the skin's natural oils. It also has a beneficial effect on the production of skin cells (keratinocytes), so the hair follicles (pores) become unblocked. It also has antiinflammatory effects.

These properties should be beneficial in kp, and it makes sense to give azelaic acid a go!

It is generally available as the 20% strength, and it is a medicine, so needs to be either prescribed or purchased from a Pharmacy.

If you would like to read some more details, here are a few links:

Hope this is of help.

Kind regards,

Annuu

As one of the azelaic lab rats , I ll keep you all informed as to its effects . Very mild burning on application but skin is tolerating it so far, no significant worsening of the redness after application, required trial is at least 1 month , probably 2 so a little patience is required.
