Vitamin A allergy?

This is probably ridiculous, but I thought I would ask it anyway! I have noticed alot of talk here about vitamin A deficiency or problems with its absorption.

However, my daughter's KP started a few months after she starting eating solids, i.e. when she would have been eating a lot of carrots - could it be that the problem with vit. A is a type of allergy?

Re: Vitamin A allergy?

she would have slowly had the usual - potatoes, turnips, rice, bananas, etc. She never had any sudden reaction - her KP just crept up, her face got really red so I thought she was teething. The redness subsided a little and she has spots with it. I kept waiting for it to go but nothing changed, went to dermo who told me it wasn't KP. I took her off dairy products for 5 weeks with no change, also it did not get worse when I started giving her dairy again. I still felt it was KP so I went to a child specialist for dermatology and he diagnosed it within a few seconds.
I have just started giving her omega 3 and putting coconut oil on. I also plan to try the apple cider vinegar. The thought of her having to start school with this on her face is just heartbreaking...

Re: Vitamin A allergy?

How old is she? Were you nursing here? Besides the following list, corn is becoming a more common allergen than it used to be. Did any of the new solids contain any of the following?:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires food manufacturers to list common food allergens on labels in simple terms adults and older children can understand. While not every possible food that can cause a food allergy is listed, these eight foods account for most food allergies. Foods included in the labeling requirements are:
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts)
  • Fish (such as bass, cod, flounder)
  • Shellfish (such as crab, lobster, shrimp)
  • Soy
  • Wheat

Re: Vitamin A allergy?

also I found this:

"In children, most allergic reactions to food are to milk, peanuts, nuts from trees, eggs, soya and wheat. Most children grow out of most allergic reactions to food in early childhood."

and more interesting details if you want them at:
Common Food Allergies

I would expect your derm to say the KP and allergies are unrelated. However, I don't think that's 100 percent true even if it's simply because allergic reaction might increase redness (urticaria) or irritation that makes the KP more obvious.

Re: Vitamin A allergy?

She's 18 months old now, since the original flare up about a year ago it has stayed pretty much the same. I am putting coconut oil on one cheek so that I can see if it does anything - so far no change but I have only been using it for 5 days.

I didn't nurse her for very long. I have two other children who do not have KP - so far, am now terrified of them getting it!
