Is this KP?
Over the last 8 months or so I began breaking out horrifically on my arms and shoulders and back. I experienced such bad acne that they were the size of ping pong balls on my back, cysts I guess. I have never been prone to acne, small break outs on my face only never arms. Eventually the acne literally went away and subsided, I do not experience crazy break outs anymore, I get small white heads every so often on my upper arms but nothing else.
I eat clean, avoid fast food, starchy and process foods and I take plenty of vitamins and workout. I am 26 years old and about 170lbs and around 15% bodyfat. Anyway I was wondering if the following pics are of KP or something else. The pictures are not of any raised bumps, they are literally red and multi colored spots that look like stuff I had picked and stayed inflammed and never went away. I have tried benzyclin from the doctor, hypoclense, differen, retin A micro, massive doses of vitamin A and E as well as AmLactin and glocolic acid to no avail. Only good thing is that i don't get disgusting white heads that need popping all the time like before. My Doctor did say it was KP but he also was in and out so fast and looked at it so quickly that who the hell knows. He perscribed 40mg of accutane as he said this is bad acne. Can anyone confirm if this is KP and or if accutane may help? Thanks. p.S. I do suffer from high oil secretion so maybe the accutane will help in that regard, my pores are also large and I have many black heads on my chest and back. |

Re: Is this KP?
Aren't there cautions about accutane around here?
I would use the Search function for accutane here and in general on the web and double check on it before using it. I have had issues with acne/KP combo on my neck chest and back my whole life though in my middle age and proper diet for me it is settling down. Since your diet seems good I would look into azelaic acid: Azelaic Acid (Topical Route) - MayoClinic.com "Azelaic acid is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It works in part by stopping the growth of skin bacteria that can help cause acne. Azelaic acid also helps to lessen acne by keeping skin pores (tiny openings on the skin's surface) clear." Not only does it stop the bacterial growth but it keeps keratin production down so you don't get that double whammy from KP. I use this still for my neck/hormonal acne. I would also suggest that you entertain the idea that even though you eat well, there could be an allergen in your diet that you haven't considered. (or maybe you have?) but web search / allerg* acne \ and you will run across info especially about milk allergy (casein and whey) being implicated in acne. There is some research on it that supports this but is not completely conclusive... best way to check personally is just to eliminate it and see what happens.

Re: Is this KP?
I drink a decent amount of milk, maybe 8-12oz a day with my protein shake which is comprised of whey protein, if there is a link between whey and acne I am screwed then because I am a weight lifter and a staple in our diet is whey protein, eliminating this I would have to provide a suitable replacement.

Re: Is this KP?
this has come up before not just here but on body-building sites. hemp protein was an option for substitute, and maybe some others. Check the bodybuilding forums...

Re: Is this KP?
Your arms look a lot like mine. I think it would be KP since I can't imagine me getting accutane after taking 80 mg of Accutane for 8 months. Who knows though. I started breaking out very badly after taking accutane, I been using glycolic acid 15% and Retin-A and it has gotten much worse over the last 2-3 months or so. Let me know if you find anything that works.
