My journey with kp

I've suffered from this annoying, embarrising (sp) condition for a long time. im 18 years old and fresh out of high school. I have a mild/moderate case of it on my upper arms, upper thighs, around the bottom of my legs, my butt, and unfortuentley, my face. which is definanetley what bothers me the most. i have it on my cheeks, chin, in between my eyebrows, and my upper lip, making it look like i have a red mustache. you have no idea how bad that sucks I didnt start any kind of treatment until last year.

i've been subscribed a few Rx's which include Retin A, (Tretinoin) and Lac Hydrin 12% cream and this is my experience with both.

Retin A-- My family doc prescribed this and told me this should clear it up in a year. HA. dont think so. After a year it showed some improvement but not even close to clearing it up on my face. however, it did decrease the redness and bumps on my arms pretty significantly. So after a year I was about done with this, but i still have the script, its nice because my insurance covers it

Lac Hydrin 12% cream-- went to the derm. and he prescribed this saying in a month it would be pretty much gone. well its been 3 months and my kp is still pretty bad. im still using this hoping for some miracle

im contemplating buying the Glytone kp kit or the Glycolix Elite kit. Im also looking at paulas choice 2% BHA lotion. I've heard good and bad things from all 3.

i also am going to start using the retin a in the morning and my lac-hydrin at night. Maybe a mix of the two will do something?

any testimonys on the products i've listed would be great

thanks for listening!

Re: My journey with kp

Hi there,

I know how bad it can get sometimes - those days where all you feel like doing is shielding away from the outside and wollow in self-pity? I know those days.

I'll give you a heads up about the Glytone KP Kit - like any AHA, it's strong, and will improve your skin (I say this from experience) - I've been using AHAs since a couple days before Halloween and my skin has improved very much so in that time - not to say that I'm cured or anything of the sort but with some consistency and long-term use I think it will do even better. The thing with Glytone is, it's way too strong for your face;
Personally, I have KP on my cheeks and above my eyebrows too - I tried putting some Neostrata 15 on it and it burned right away, tried it two weeks later and got the same result; AHAs can be really tough on thin skin like the face. I recommend for your face using a glycolic complex with a lower percentage like 10% or 5%, or perhaps finding a combination AHA & BHA (salicycilic - I never know if I spell this right - has been proven to have some inflammatory properties which may help with your redness). I just received HydrOxy-10 from Pharamgel, it's a 10% AHA and 2% BHA combo - last night I used it on my face as well as this morning with no real difference but no irritation, so I'm going to keep trying it out to see how it does (I'll let you know).

I hope this helped just a little

Re: My journey with kp

thank you for your help!

so is the glytone kit a pretty good choice for the body?

Paulas choice is a 2% BHA, do you think that using paulas choice and lac hydrin 12% cream or retin a on my face would be a good idea? Do you know of a lotion or anything with a higher percentage of BHA than 2%?

sorry for all the questions!

all i want is for this to go away, just like everyone else. or at least improve significantly.. im willing to spend any amount of money.

im also considering the seabuckthorn treatment... you never know until you try right?

Re: My journey with kp

Well, I'm no expert, however I have been on Retin-A, used AmLactin (12%), but I haven't tried Paula's Choice.

My advice to you is to not over-do it. My fear with you using Retin-A and lactic acid is that you'll really irritate your skin; retin-A on it's own is known to redden, flake, and really dry the skin and AHAs have been known to do the same.

You're best to limit the amount of acids and strong complexes you're compiling. The 2% BHA is the average by the way, it's rare you find lotions or products with a high BHA percentage, however, I have heard of 5% that you can get prescribed by a derm.

I do know that you SHOULDN'T mix the Paula's choice and the Retin-A. In fact, I'm pretty sure it states on the packaging for the Retin-A I had Not to use it with that type of acid since they are both peeling agents which will irritate your skin beyond belief.

I know you want the quickest and most potent solution possible, but it may be just a little bit more trial and error than that (or so I've learned).

As far as Glytone is concerned, yes I would say it's good for your body - however weirdly enough my legs seem to be really benefiting from the Kit but my arms (which started to look great after using the 15%) look like they've been resorting back to their old ways (the dots I have seem redder than usual). Although, this may be my body telling me that the stuff is too strong for my arms but works well on my legs.

I hope this helps!

Re: My journey with kp

Yeah, your def. right. I'm just getting a little frustrated I guess!

I think I'm going to just go ahead and use the glytone kit on my body, but not every day until my skin gets used to the high percentage of acid. And I think I'm gonna try the Paulas Choice by itself for my face. Have you tried the eucerin redness relief for redness? That's my main issue really, especially my face.

Re: My journey with kp

I can't say I have used it but I have heard decent reviews on this site.
I've tried the Eucerin with 10% Urea and it did help my skin in making it smooth but 1) Nothing for redness and 2) is Way too expensive where I am ($20 for 200ml, I think not).

If you're truly bothered by the redness on your face (I know I am), give the redness relief a try - it doesn't hurt to try and others can benefit from your progress updates!

Glytone on body and Paula's choice on face sounds good to me - just a word of advice? Put on the Paula's Choice before you put on the Glytone I've definately made that mistake before!

Re: My journey with kp

That's gonna be my plan than!

Thank you SO much for you advice! I really appreciate it!

I'm going to order the products this next week and I'll keep you updated with the results.

And I'm gonna go ahead and try the redness relief. What do I have to lose right?

Again, Thanks a million!

Re: My journey with kp

Exactly - I will warn you about something concerning the Glytone though that I just discovered recently! It was too much for my skin going twice a day - so make sure you stick to the once a day instructions for some time until you bump up to twice - I got a bit of a burn on my left forearm from it - so I stopped putting it on temporarily. What I've found that helps cushion the blow of the Glytone is applying it with some coconut oil or dryness relief moisturizer - helps it spread and you don't need to use much.
