16 month old just diagnosed with KP.. some questions?
hi everyone, my son has been recently diagnosed with KP.
the bumps started appearin on his face when he was 6 months old and have now moved to his arms/legs the past few months. The first derm i went to gave me a cortisone cream for his face and another cortisone cream for his body. it helped on his arms/legs a bit but did nothing for his face. i went for a second opinion to another derm who told me i shouldn't be using cortisone on my son!(I had no idea i wasnt supposed to but am not sure why that is??? can someone explain). I stopped using the cortisone. Treatment (is this right?): He said to use Epi-max(its an all purpose moisturiser with pure cetamacrogol cream BP with 10% glycerin) for his face and Epi-max plus (moisturiser for dry skin pure cetamacrogol cream B.P. with 10% glycerine plus 10% urea) for his body. Epizone for his face and body in the bath as a soap. Does this sound right? what sunblock should i use?? i am applying the lotions twice a day.. is this all i can do?? do these creams sound right? what about a loofah? any advice for a newly diagnosed child would be appreciated! thanks so much for your time!! |

Re: 16 month old just diagnosed with KP.. some questions?
I'd avoid the loofah I think. I find it really easy to overdo it with a loofah. I'd recommend using maybe some exfoliating gloves or something gentle and not to do it for too long or more that once/twice a week.
I don't know anything about corizone but looking on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortisone#Effects_and_uses) it says it's a steroid and can suppress the immune system. It sounds too strong for a baby/toddler. The new stuff you've got sounds less scary ![]() |

Re: 16 month old just diagnosed with KP.. some questions?
myztic - I'm with annna on this, cortisone and loofah sound like overdoing it for a 16-month old as long he's not scratching it raw. He may outgrow some of it too and if it is not hurtful right now, I wouldn't go overboard. moisturizing a bundle and avoiding soaps work in my extended family. EVCO or something like it (Koru Pharmaceuticals - ---Koru kp---Oleum) I think would be safe. My inclination is to avoid petroleum based products too. there's more on non-RX baby product safety here:
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/bro...incat=babycare Have his MDs looked into any allergy connections? strawberries is one in my family that makes for bad baby eczema and skin probs all over even if it's not a full-on anaphylactic response. and looking into what he eats - is he nursing or on formula? if he's nursing, are you getting enough of everything (oh lord, nursing is SO hard on our bodies if they aren't being supported) so that you can pass it on to him? fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, A and E? or if on formula, same question about the formula, are you using one of the new DHA, EPA blends? etc... Sounds like your sons is pretty strong if the MDs didn't tell you to "just ignore it, it'll go away", hope it all goes well. - bd |

Re: 16 month old just diagnosed with KP.. some questions?
Hi there thanks for your reply!
well one of the doctors just said to leave it and it should be fine.. then he gave me some mask thing that i was supposed to put on him twice a week for 30 minutes.. but i dont think that would be good or safe for my son so i am just using the moisturisers they have given me. I am nursing my son but will be stopping in 2 months. I take Omega vitamins, calcium, and a pregnancy vitamin... im really not sure what to do.. i dont mind it so much on his body.. but i mean.. his face does get pretty red... i also have no idea which sunblock to use ![]() |
