Anna,

You may need to try this several times to tell if there is a difference from day to day, rather from flush to flush. Keep in touch about this, please.

Re: 5 days Skin 75% clear !!!!!

I bought one bottle(500 mg niacin /pill) today and tried right after I bought it. The red flush started probably only 3 mins after I took the pill. But the flush lasted about 40 mins...My whole body was red, scalp, ear, neck, arms, legs, back and I was really able to feel it. It felt like that you are getting biten by ants . When the flush was on, I felt that at least the skin on my arms was quite soft and the bumps were barely noticeable (maybe because the redness, ) . But after the flush was gone, my skin sorta went back to normal. But it's my first time today. I will keep trying and see if it works.

That's a very strong dose, isn't it? I'm only taking 100mg and my flush wasn't too bad.

Alternative Names

Diet - niacin; Nicotinic acid; Vitamin B3

Definition

Niacin is a type of B vitamin. It is water-soluble, which means it is not stored in the body. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water. Leftover amounts of the vitamin leave the body through the urine. That means you need a continuous supply of such vitamins in your diet.

Function

Niacin assists in the functioning of the digestive system, skin, and nerves. It is also important for the conversion of food to energy.

Food Sources

Niacin (also known as vitamin B3) is found in dairy products, poultry, fish, lean meats, nuts, and eggs. Legumes and enriched breads and cereals also supply some niacin.

Side Effects

A deficiency of niacin causes pellagra. The symptoms include inflamed skin, digestive problems, and mental impairment.

Large doses of niacin can cause liver damage, peptic ulcers, and skin rashes. Even normal doses can be associated with skin flushing. It can be prescribed as a treatment for elevated total cholesterol and other types of lipid disorders, but it should only be used with medical supervision due to its potential for severe side effects.

Recommendations

Recommended daily allowances (RDAs) are defined as the levels of intake of essential nutrients that the Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine has found to be adequate to meet the known nutrient needs of most healthy persons.

Specific recommendations for each vitamin depend on age, gender, and other factors (such as pregnancy). The general recommended intakes for niacin are listed below:

Infants

0-6 months: 2 milligrams per day (mg/d)
7-12 months: 4 mg/d
Children

1-3 years: 6 mg/d
4-8 years: 8 mg/d
9-13 years: 12 mg/d
Adolescents and Adults

Age 14 and up: 14 mg/d
Pregnant women: 18 mg/d
Breastfeeding women: 17 mg/d
The best way to get the daily requirement of essential vitamins is to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods from the food guide pyramid.

Hi Again , yes I know it would be dangerous in some situation and i would never take more than the 500mg. as sold. But still every prescription drug we take comes with a pamphlet of a thousand possible side effects . this has to be much safer than that,
I tried various doctor treatments , retin A . ultraviolet light etc. with limited results and lots of money. now its been about a week and my skin is smooth ! only red dots remain witch i think will go away with a tan .

Re: 5 days Skin 75% clear !!!!!

RDA amounts are purposefully very low. They are the minimum required amount of any given nutrient to avoid an illness or disability caused by complete lack of that nutrient. For instance, the RDA of Vit. C is 75 mg for adult women. But if you are sick or otherwise trying to strengthen your immune system, you can safely take much greater amounts. I take 4,000 to 5,000 mg per day.

As with anything we ingest, we are each individually responsible for educating ourselves and making a responsible decision.

Re: 5 days Skin 75% clear !!!!!

This is an interesting discussion. I saw another thread about niacin about a week ago (an archived thread, I believe), so I got some for my daughter (moderate KP on her arms, legs and face).

I'm actually trying to keep her dosage to a minimum in order to avoid the flushing because she's only 5. While an adult will be willing to go through flushing for possibility of reducing KP, a 5-year-old won't. So I sprinkle a little powder here and there on her food. She's only had flushing twice (and she wasn't happy).

At any rate, I was wondering if anyone has seen improvement when taking a lower dose/avoiding the flushing? So far, my daughter's face seems to be clearing up. Her cheeks are almost perfectly smooth but still have the characteristic redness. Her arms are still rough, but it's only been about a week. I hope these results are real and not my imagination.

Re: 5 days Skin 75% clear !!!!!

i bought the 500mg flushing niacin. I tried it last night. it's a dreadful experience. like having itchy hives all over your body.I experienced that for about 2 hours. i can see how they can get away with selling the non-flushing niacin for three times the price.
ill keep taking this horrable pill for a couple of weeks edleast, i would do anything to get rid of the kp. wouldn't that be crazy if this worked and we had to take this pill for the rest of our lifes, having to deal with this flushing for 2 hours a day everyday. it would be well worth it for me!!

Re: 5 days Skin 75% clear !!!!!

From Wikipedia:
"After 1 to 2 weeks of a stable dose, most patients no longer flush."

So I don't think you would have to put up with the flushing forever.

wow, 2 hours, that's a strong effect. Actually you will become tolerant to niacin soon. I've been taking it for about 4 days. The flush got milder each day. Today almost no flush at all.
