Keratosis pilaris=hyperkeratosis due to wounds?

Hello, this is my first post and it`s a doubt I`m having.

Last year in the right side of my face I sufferd some acne which I picked and touched a lot.

And there was a specific area where I had really bad acne and I remember that I touched a lot for some months.

The thing is that after all this area healed the new skin was thicker. Only this area.

My question is if this is a simple hyperkeratosis caused by excessive rubbing and touching (like a callus) or if it`s the same as keratosis pilaris.

Thanks

Roo,

I don't know the answer to your question. Perhaps no one here does, but if you can offer any helpful comments, please reply to Roo.

What you describe as "think skin" isn't KP. KP is characterized by usually rough bumps and/or discolored hair follicles that usually don't have a hair growing out of them. They often get enflamed, they sometimes get a "cap" of dry skin that isn't exfoliating correctly out of the follicle.

Maybe you could describe what you have a little better. If its just a patch of dry, thick skin, its very common. You could probably find help if you looked for a dry skin or even an acne Forum. Just try drinking more water for awhile, and pat it dry, and wash your face for probably no more then once a day, and if you have normal, healthy skin, it should exfoliate away in no time.

Re: Keratosis pilaris=hyperkeratosis due to wounds?

thanks guys for replying

what I have is more like a patch (I don`t have like pimples or uniform dots) of thicker, rough skin.

I know it`s an hyperkeratosis as a defense of my skin from all my constant picking on it.

what I was wondering was if it is a KP or if it`s a simple hyperkeratosis

thanks

Scar-like tissue?

In KP hyperkeratosis manifests like many small bumps in your skin, not a single large area.

One of many symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris includes this kind of hyperkeratosis.

KP include other symptoms that not always are manifested by everyone like:
bump redness or irritation,
flushing-blushing,
itchy skin,
dry skin, etc.

This is why KP has many types: KPR, KPRF, KP, KPUO, etc...

Please visit our picture Gallery located in the rigt-top part of every page. In a tab-like buttons. Or simply click this link: Gallery

This way you can see if you have KP or not, also you can upload you own picture of the affected area, so we can see what are you talking about and tell you what we think.

There's a sticky thread that contains info in how to upload pictures right here: http://www.keratosispilaris.org/gene...ics-files.html

You can also add them to the Gallery

Thanks!

Thanks Kevod, Chris and Elsa

about the photos, what I have is not like what I see at the photo gallery.

What I think is that hyperkeratosis is something that can manifest in several ways. Hyperkeratosis is when the surface of the skin has excessive amountos of keratin.
One way of manifesting the hyperkeratosis is KP and other way among others it may be what I have, an hyperkeratosis of a different cause and class of KP, due to excessive suffering of that area of skin (like some parts of our fingers because of writing or playing guitar, etc)

I don`t know...

You are right, hyperkeratosis manifests in different ways, but I think yours is not KP.

Maybe your skin thickening is really scars that were left by picking and touching your acne. When scars form, they are result of a mitosis (cell reproduction) and maybe, it became affected resulting in a thicker tissue. Who knows...

Anyways, you are decided to treat your skin thickening right?
Maybe some methods that are suggested in our forums can help you out like AHA's or Salicylic Acid.

Talk to your derm and ask if he/she think it is right to prescribe you some Salicylic Acid for your face, maybe for a limited time so your skin regenerates.

You'll have to apply it twice a day some moisturizing face lotion or coconut oil.
